Cleans under the beds!
on April 12, 2011

I love my iRobot, the thing I like most is its ability to "clean under beds". The thing I like least is having to empty it and untangle all the hairs. I feel so lazy watching it do all the work. Brilliant invention!
Pros: Cleans Floor Edges, Easy To Empty, Easy To Use, Efficient, Lightweight, Long Power Cord, Picks Up HairFur Easy, Runs Reasonably Quiet
Cons: Needs Emptied Often

i got Spike used and he cleans the floor very well. Fun to watch him work the only thing is have to reset the software some times to make him clean right and run the right amount of time. Probably because i did by him used is the reason it dose that.
Pros: Easy To Empty, Easy To Use, Efficient, Lightweight, Long Power Cord, Powerful/Good Suction
Cons: Noisy

Love it!

Got this as a Christmas present, and have used it at least 1x/week since (it's now end of April). Best thing about it is that you can program it to clean on it's own. We go to work/school; come home to a freshly vacuumed home. Love that! I also love how it gets under our bed -- something a little difficult to do with our conventional vacuum. My only complaints: 1. It is pretty high-maintenance: cleaning brushes, get's stuck under or beside some piece of furniture (we had to hunt for it like a lost pet once), cleaning brushes, and cleaning brushes. 2. I'd rely on it more if it had a HEPA filter. My husband and daughter suffer from allergies. Daughter more so. If the Roomba had a HEPA filter, I'd be happy to get rid of our upright HEPA vacuum. Instead, the Roomba cleans the living room, hallways, and master bedroom; while the regular vac cleans kids' room and playroom. So we have both. Regardless, we still LOVE IT!
Pros: Can put it on a schedule, Convenient, Great for under the bed
Cons: High Maintenance, No Hepa Filter

i just purchase the rhomba. a friend at work told me about it and i decided to try it. let me tell you, it change my life. i work and i have a large dog and a cat. i keep it on when i go to work in the morning in certain section of the house and when i get home my house is nice and clean. finally i dont see dog hair all over the house. i actually got rid of my cleaning lady. it really made a great difference in my house cleanlines status. i recommand it out there to all the working moms and dads. i think eventually i will buy myself the one that wash the floors. love it!!!! also im a physical therapist and if we can avoid bending down to clean under furnitures it much better and healthiier for our back!!! (ergonomically)
Pros: Easy To Empty, Easy To Use, Efficient, Powerful/Good Suction
Cons: Noisy

Better than I expected

from Central Ohio - 1890 2-story farmhouse
I live in a large farmhouse and so far, I can clean all of the large open rooms downstairs on 2 or 3 charges which is just fine for me. If I am home, I can clean everything in 1 day. * Please put removable ends on the rubber beater bar (as on the brush bar). Hair etc. wraps around and it takes a knife and tweezers to get at all of it. * Found the brush roller very easy to clean. Really doesn't need the removable ends or the tool. Just pick the hairs off by hand. * DUST, DUST, DUST is the biggest con. I clean the robot more frequently than recommended because there is always dust on all the plastic parts underneath and the filter gets dirty quickly. I use an old toothbrush to clean the filter and the plastic, but outside as the dust flies everywhere. Needs a much more effective dust collector or even multiple collectors. I find that there is always dust on the beater bar and the brush bar and all the other plastic and with the static electricity, it doesn't shake off the plastic, you have to brush it off. * Gets stuck on the metal floor vents. I just cover these with a small box of something and the robot bumps right around the box. * I have rugs on hardwood floors that have pads underneath and the robot has trouble moving up from the hardwood onto the rug. Going down is no problem. * No problems at all going from hardwood to carpet and vice versa. * Robot could do better with rug fringe. I cleaned a lot from the debris bin and beater bar and so now I just roll the ends of my vintage rugs under to protect the fringe from being eaten. * Sometimes the DOCK bar doesn't work and I need to press twice. * Virtual walls work nice for blocking a small entry way, but when I tried to use 2 together set at max distance to block a wide space (~16'), they didn't work all that well. I found that putting down the connected metal tubes from my old tank vacuum worked as effectively as the virtual wall for blocking the smaller entryways. I had to purchase "C" batteries especially for the virtual walls (and I purchased rechargeables and hence needed a charging unit as well). I suggest using AA batteries if possible as everyone already has tons of these available for all of today's electronics, remotes etc. I actually don't use the virtual walls. * Virtual Walls need an on/off switch so that if you didn't want to use one (the 560 comes with 2) you would not have to unload the batteries to inactivate the unit. * WISH LIST: I have 5" high molding at the bottom of my walls and it would be great to have a retractable arm that would lift up when the robot encounters a wall and brush down the dust from the molding. This arm would have to retract back into the unit when finished so that it could scoot under the furniture. Of course, the search pattern would have to be changed to have the robot travel the length of the wall (as much as possible.) * All in all, I really am glad that I purchased my robot. My house is much cleaner now than it has ever been and a bonus is that I am forced to pick up the floor so that the robot can clean effectively. Thanks for a great product!
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Covers Entire Room, Deep Cleaning Ability, Forces me to pick up junk, Long Run Time, Skirts on couch no prob
Cons: Can Get Stuck, Dust filter inadequate, Loud Operation, Prob w rug w underpag

Reconditioned Roomba 560

Love my Roomba. I had it about 6 months. I have it programmed 2 run every other day. Have to remember 2 clean it after each use. I get a lot of hair wrapped around brushes & have 2 clean each time but it is worth it. I have 2 dogs, 1 cat and 5 birds and it sure helps me keep up with all their mess. I "spot" clean with it under the bird cages every evening to clean up seed. I replaced side cleaning brushes twice & just had 2 order more. They break off pretty easy. Lately R2D2 seems 2 get confused, runs around in same circle, maybe battery going? cant live without it!
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Covers Entire Room, Hassle Free Operation, Long Run Time, Pet Friendly
Cons: Can Get Stuck, Frequent Maintenance

Has its drawbacks

This vacuum is great when it works - I love it but I consider the delicate nature of the side brushes a major flaw. They got torn up within three weeks of use. They are expensive to replace and there is no break on the postage if you place multiple orders. I had a less effective roomba but the side brushes were much more durable. The least roomba could do is find a way to sell accessories in the same stores the vacuums are sold. It would save some of us postage.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Pet Friendly
Cons: Can Get Stuck, Does Not Clean Stairs, Frequent Maintenance, Side brushes defective

Older model better on pet hair
on October 24, 2007

from San Antonio, TX
This model is not particularly good at pet hair. I had an older model that was specifically designed for pet hair, and it was pretty good. Two runs would usually clear up bad pet hair. But I ran this thing 5 or 6 times, and it still didn't clean the hair up in a satisfactory manner. I think it's the bristle brush not being as stiff, and perhaps the method it uses to extract the hair from the brush. Also, it's difficult to justify the extra $100 for this model, when the only perks are that it slows down before hitting things, and it can travel from room to room independently. It might be a little smarter, but that's still a pretty meager reason. I suppose it would be great for people without pets and only lightly soiled carpets. But you could get an older model cheaper that would work just as effectively. I hate to knock iRobot, since I believe they have a future. But they really need to improve the performance of their flagship product.
Pros: Cleans Under Furniture, Covers Entire Room, Pet Friendly
Cons: Not good with pet hair
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
