Cleaning head module fails
on July 26, 2011
Posted by: roux

I have had the 560 for 3 years, and have had to replace the cleaning head module once a year just to keep it running. I think this is a design flaw that should have been fixed, but it doesn't seem like it will be. At [$], yearly, this is certainly a cost and hassle that should be factored into the purchase.
Cons: Inefficient, Poor Design, Unreliable
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I HEART Roomba
on June 7, 2011

My boyfriend dropped his jaw when he found out how much I paid for it, "but baby, I didn't pay tax[...], and it was 50 bucks off..." Some of that was slight exaggeration -I hope he's not reading this. Over time, as he sees how clean my floors are kept, he's been completely won over. He didn't even bat and eye when I recently bought the scooba230 (which I returned almost immediately). I have three dogs, and my house is 75x13. Subtracting the area that furniture and cabinetry take up I probably have about 850sqft. My kitchen and bathroom are tiled, while the rest of the house is white linoleum . Honestly, before the roomba, more often than not it was grey. "The maid" is scheduled to clean at 8am every morning. I do this b/c the maid is not perfect and requires attention every now and then. Lately she's been requiring attention more often than not - which brings up my one critique, a small design flaw that I think they've attempted to correct in the 7** series. The washer caps on the brushes attract hair and get caught, in addition, from what I've read, the cleaning head module allows hair and dust into the gear box (?) This may be what is causing a thumping sound even when the brushes are not loaded. I'm hoping to speak with customer service tomorrow. I've sent an email. I'll call during business hours tomorrow. Besides that small issue which I'm sure will be addressed tomorrow, I love my roomba. It wakes me up in the morning better than my alarm clock. It's not quiet. Don't schedule it to clean a room you're in while you're sleeping. That said, I don't hear it when it's in the next room, and my window a/c unit is running so there's that. It's so motivating to know that my house is getting cleaned. Maintenance Issues:-Sometimes it runs underneath my coffee table and gets stuck. -It gets caught on cords-The sound of it annoys my boyfriend in the morning-Lately the brushes have been getting fuller faster, and consequently getting hair caught in the washer caps. Maybe two to three times a week I only run it once a day. I mop at least twice a week since I've had it. Cleaning:-5-10 minutes of cleaning. 5 just to clean the brushes, empty and blow remaining dust out of the bins, and clean the front wheel. 10 minutes to do detail cleaning with a q-tip. -I do what one reviewer recommended. I bought an air can and I alternate brushes and filters instead of using them until they deteriorate. While I'm using one set, I'm cleaning another when it's convenient, then just replace the dirty ones and so on. Everybody who's seen my floors and my three dogs comments on how clean the floors are. Before roomba, I had given up. I would do a detailed vacumning once a week, maybe. It would take me an hour to an hour and a half. Roomba is a lifestyle! Keep your house spotless in 15 minutes a day! It's inspired me to mop more. I now mop twice a week instead of once every three weeks. It's inspired me to stay neater. You have to give roomba a debris free floor if you want good results. Things get dusted more often, and my teeth stay whiter! Well, clearly not all of that is true. The dogs aren't bothered at all. I thought they would freak out and bark. My eldest dog barely blinked when roomba tapped her where she lie. Success!!!So much impact from such little time invested! I'm sure Mr. Covey would approve ;) If this thing only lasts a year, then it's still worth it. Certainly, I spend more time cleaning then I did before, but my house STAYS clean as opposed to that nasty cycle of cleaning once a week then watching it progressively get filthier. The question now is should I get a scooba? I just bought and returned the 230. It didn't clean my floors at all. I'm so happy with the roomba though. I want the scooba to take me to the next level.
Pros: Easy To Empty, Easy To Use, Efficient
Cons: Noisy, Small Design flaws

Over a year later, I still love it

Started using Roomba regularly with the scheduler, didn't realize how MUCH I relied on it until the contact to recognize & charge on the home base died. Oh woe is me, I had to actually remember to turn it on! Let me tell you, THAT didn't last long. I now have 2 Roombas, one to work with the home base & scheduler for cleaning the kitchen and great room, and the old one that I can run in the bedroom in the morning while I'm getting ready for work and can be there to start it and bring it back for charging. Just wish it could do stairs and black rugs, and it would be perfect. Also, I have learned how great the service dept at IRobot is! They are always willing to help, walk me through the questions & troubleshoot problems patiently, and have replaced parts under warranty without hesitation or argument - [...]. Don't hesitate to call these folks if you are having difficulty - they are great!
Pros: Easy To Empty, Easy To Use, Efficient, Powerful/Good Suction
Cons: Noisy

Happy Feet

Geez, I love this thing. The Roomba 560 is soooo helpful. We have all hardwood floors through the entire main living floor of our house. I also prefer to be barefoot when I'm at home and have a tendency to sit on the floor rather than a proper chair. That means I was vacuuming rather frequently to keep dirt and whatever else was on the floor from sticking to my feet and from having to sit in it (turns out carpet helps hide dirt!)Plus fighting with my boyfriend over who's turn it was to vacuum was getting old. Then we got (Dr)Phil. The floors are way more clean than we ever got them (see impatient young'uns) Plus its fun! It's not that loud, we can still talk over it just fine. I might not watch a movie that has a lot of hushed dialog in it while its running, but we can still carry on normal conversations just fine. It scares the furry ones a LOT less that the normal vacuum (they mostly ignore it). It does take a long time to vacuum BUT it's the thoroughness of it that seems to really get the room clean. Plus it does not "map" the room. Supposedly it calculates cleaning time based on the longest pass it can find and then is programmed to meander like an insect. Clean up is super easy. Just be sure to pull the yellow bearing caps every now and then and clean hair out of there....we missed that and found it in the help page - little guy is back to perfect. So overall, not perfect, but HUGE improvement over having to vacuum myself and the over cleanliness of our home. Worth every penny.
Pros: Awesome, Easy To Empty, Easy To Use, Lightweight, Powerful/Good Suction
Cons: Inefficient

Wave of the Future - Today
on February 22, 2010

I am a Condo owner and I recently purchased the Roomba 560 for the simple purpose of keeping my high traffic main room arguably clean. I was skeptical until the first week was over, which is when I realized I hadn't vacuumed by hand at all and didn't need to! My condo is about 1000 square feet, I have a child and pet and it still cleans very well. In fact I have taken to letting it clean all the floors in all the rooms and couldn't be happier! I do occasionally have to use my had operated vacuum, but on a regular basis Roomba does a phenomenal job. If you are having second thoughts about buying one I will tell you this, Roomba is the wave of the future - TODAY!
Pros: Easy To Empty, Easy To Use, Efficient, Powerful/Good Suction

Side Brush Design BAD Otherwise Great

I have had roombas of EVERY generation, dating back to the original silver one. The side brush has always been a problem. On the original roomba, it was too "robust" with its downward-facing bristles and it caused damage along the entire edge of the wall to wall carpeting. The newest incarnation is much gentler; however, the wheels run over the brush and endless break spokes off! My latest side brush went from six spokes to 2 spokes in a matter of three weeks. This is a design flaw. Especially if Irobot is charging [$] for a side brush replacement pack! This is the best, most effective roomba yet...but the side brush is still a problem.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Covers Entire Room
Cons: Frequent Maintenance, Side Brushes Break Often

Not worth the money

I use mine only on the hardwood floors and it has to be cleaned nearly every time I use it. I have two dogs and it is definitely not pet hair friendly. Like the majority of people out there have said already, the cleaning module needs to be replaced and I've only had the vacuum a little over a year. What kind of product fails so quickly that cost so much. I would not recommend this particular vacuum because it is junk. I wish they would recall this product.
