As an engineer/producer of the "WHO" and many others over the years, I was asked to write a general review of JBL products some years ago which was posted on the JBL site........As well as listing many past favourite JBL speakers that I had used over the years (different units in different situations) I "praised" these speakers as my most recent faves at the time.........WELL - I still have AND use them above ALL my others AND they are still the "Best I've Ever Had" :-) Who needs a Sub Woofer - they have an absolute wonderful sound and overall frequency response..........
WHO'S YOUR DADDY........The L890's - that's Who!!!

Legendary JBL Sound

I'll never forget the first time I heard a pair of JBL speakers. I was a kid in high school, and I was over at a friends house who's parents had bought a pair of JBL L 65's. They were being paired with a Scott tube amp and a Garrard turntable, don't remember what kind of cartridge was being used. I was totally blown away. I'd never heard The Beatles, Stones, Doors, Who etc. like that before. A few years later, I heard a pair of L 100's. I was a young guy and couldn't afford any of this stuff, but I had discovered the best speakers in the world.
My first real hi fi system included an pair of JBL L 19's. I used those speakers twenty years. Since then, I've owned a number of other brands of speakers, and nothing satisfies like JBL.
I've had my L 890's about a year now. They were pretty well broken in after about twenty hours of playing. Their sound stage is very up front, great frequency response, very dynamic AKA very musical. The imaging is very good. The 890's disappear in the room leaving only the music.
I'm using the 890's with an Onkyo A 9070 amp, Onkyo C 7070 CD player, Monster 400i interconnect. I'm very pleased with these speakers.

Fill your hungry ears

Had these for several weeks now; shipping at ground rate was 2 days! Shopped, researched, participated in many blogs before finalizing a purchase. Things to consider: Nothing beats listening to speakers live; this takes time and there are many speakers in this price point. Room layout is as important as the power needed to drive speakers of this scope, take time to place speakers and choose an amp wisely - an additional cost but part of an overall good system. I wanted BIG, CLEAR sound with depth front to back and side to side; not an engineer or audiophile with a literate speaker vocabulary, but I have a discerning ear and 3 sets of other 'major' brand speakers, each have unique qualities and I love them all. Have the L890's in a 2 channel stereo music play only arrangement; the 890's fit the bill! - I love all music types and have been testing them daily for hours at a time - these are wonderful, large, box speakers with incredible highs, even mid-range and just enough base to bang out big drum sounds without drowning everything else out. You can, of course, add a separate sub-woofer if you like that large thump, but I don't find it necessary in this arrangement. The household agrees that these are great speakers for the price and need to play all music types very well; nothing gets 'diluted' at low and especially high volume play - clear, concise and very enjoyable. As large speakers go, you will need to wrestle them out of the box and make certain there is room for them to breath, but simple to set up and they look nice too. Again, can't emphasize enough that a high power amp is needed to drive these well; we are going to 'test' them in the home theatre system soon where I expect them to soar equally well. If you want some BIG, CLEAR and versatile wall to wall sound you definitely want to give these a listen.

High-Frequncy Transducer titanium dome are fragile and not to reliable. On E80 both were burned after an average usage (2-3h/week) @ max 35% vol and maybee 10 times @80% vol. Couldn't find them and had to replace with some fakes. My system: Marantz SA7003, Pioneer DV LX550, Pioneer VSX 1017AV, JBL E80 (2), L810(2), ES150P, LC1 and Belkin PF30. All purchased new in New Zealand.
Best regards. Peter.

I bought this pair along with l8400 and other speaks in this series about 6 year ago. I have been very happy with the sound. I've paired them with a Harman Kardon 347 receiver.

I have never really been happy with these loudspeakers. I've had JBL Olympus C-50 and JBL Decade L-26 and they were honest to goodness JBL's. These are not even close to what made JBL iconic
