Great room mate!

We bought Wally almost 8 months ago now and still love him. I was involved in two nastyt car accidents that trashed my back and ultimately required surgery. That being said, my wife, after watching me struggle with household chores decided one day to invest in Wally. I had encountered the roomba a number of years ago in a large do it yourself store and was thoroughly impressed. So when we opened the box, I had a pretty good understanding of what we had. I quickly found I grossly underestimated it's worth.  With two cats and a two year old to deal with, the floors are anything but clean. Even with everyday vacuuming. We will use Wally in a room at a time, going through first to make sure there is nothing on the floor that he won't deal with. They do not like small toys, especially cat toys, shoe laces, scarves, or long fine blanket tasles. You will figure out very quickly that when you hear the "uh oh" sound from the roomba, he has probably eaten something that he shouldnt. After the prep, I drop him in the middle, hit the clean button, activate the virtual wall on the outside of the doorway, and check on him from time to time. We get the happy tone announcing he's finished and prep the next room and repeat the whole process. I have to say that this is an amazing little device. Wally is definitely well loved in our home. Our daughter really enjoys helping to clean him and get the areas set up. Wally requires a lot of detail oriented maintenance. I figure the time spent cleaning is far less than I would if I was doing the vacuuming. So that's an easy one, but make no mistake, with pets and girls with long hair, these require daily cleaning if you want to keep them in top order. I have added a fine tooth comb to the took kit. I will run the round cleaning tool over the brush several times first, then go through with the comb and brush out every bit I can get. If not, the bristles would quickly get clogged on pet hair.  Do not buy one of these thinking that all you will have to do is hit the button and empty the bin. Roomba will not do the maintenance on it's own. It is not that simple and it will work great the first couple of times and then you will be upset. They do great with hair but lousy with crumbs and cat food/litter on hard surfaces. I will usually sweep the hard surface areas onto the carpet first and boo kit out of the bathroom and kitchen. It just seems to work better that way. Also,  MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THE PET'S WATER BOWLS UP. They do not like water, and if they bump the full bowl and it spills, it could suck it through and damage it. We have very affectionately accepted Wally into our family. Now, my wife's parents have one, my folks have one, my sister and her husband are 'looking into it', and I can't recommend them enough. Again, these are great little devices and work exceptionally well provided you are willing to clean them regularly. If not, as with any machine, it will fall apart. That said, cleaning is easy, just go to the store and grab a cheap comb to use with cleaning the hair from the brush and you will be pleased with all the other things you will be able to do while you're 'vacuuming'.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Covers Entire Room, Large Debris Bin, Long Run Time, Pet Friendly, Quiet
Cons: Frequent Maintenance

LOVE LOVE LOVE My Roomba!

So easy to keep the floors clean now! With two dogs I didn't realize all the dirt and hair we had everyday until we got Wally. No dragging out the vacuum and working up a sweat. We live in Hawaii, and the house is open to the outside all day. I can clean the living room everyday and get tons of stuff picked up. Works on our carpets and hardwood floors, and even our little bath mats.Wally usually does two to three rooms before going back to"sleep/recharge". We really like the sound of my little "maid" doing his work. This is really the best thing we've bought in a long time. Get one you won't be sorry! We are thinking of giving our grown kids Roombas for Christmas! We've had our Roomba for five or six months now, no problems.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Covers Entire Room, Easy To Setup, Hassle Free Operation, Large Debris Bin, Long Run Time, No bending no pushing, Pet Friendly, Quiet, Very through
Cons: Can Get Stuck

Great for 'good enough' jobs

We use one robot for our entire ground floor (about 1500 sq ft). It will typically clean 70 - 80% of the floor. So, use this for "in between" cleanings by vacuum -- it's not a vacuum replacement.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Covers Entire Room, Pet Friendly
Cons: Always miss some spots

I have now owend this 530 for 2 years. After 6 month of minimun usage (once a week) the brush head dies. I have not pets, and not allot of traffic. The carpet is smooth comercial type no hairs or pattern. It does a good job when it works. Used new brush heads 5 times and broke again. After complaining to tech support they changed them again. (allot of begging)So now into 1.5 years old new brush head arrives installed them works great... Next time I used it i noticed the apt not clean and roomba in middle of room. Well after testing the roomba I found out the Cliff sensors are broken.. Well now they said they are not fixable and it needs to be replaced. So after all this bad luck I will not take a chance and throw more money out the window. Good Like I will go somewhere else.
Cons: Frequent Maintenance, Loses Charge Quickly, Noisy
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

LOVE It! but it didn't last long...

I have used my roomba at least 3 times per week since it was given to me as a gift in 2008. This year (2010) after only having it for 18 months it stopped working. I tried all the trouble shooting recommendations and even contacted iRobot...they only suggested I purchase a new one. I followed all of the cleaning recommendations, so I'm not sure what went wrong with it. I absolutely loved it while it worked and it helped keep my carpets so much cleaner. (I named him Jacques, like the cleaner shrimp on Finding Nemo) It could clean my entire living room, hallway and dining room on one charge...and sometimes the bedroom if I let it. I really miss it, but don't want to dish out the money to buy a new one.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Covers Entire Room, Deep Cleaning Ability, Long Run Time
Cons: Frequent Maintenance, Only lasted 1 year

I try to run it every day; it has helped to keep the pet hair cleaned up and the dirt and grass the three dogs bring in with them. Everyday, it is finding less and less and the house is cleaner and cleaner. And I don't have to do anything but set the thing free and then clean it once it is finished.

The single best investment I've ever mad

I'm a single mom with a full-time job and a long commute. We have a large house with mostly hard floors and currently have 2 cats and 4 dogs. Since buying the Roomba my house has never been cleaner. I run it almost daily and have no complaints. I absolutely love that my house will vacuum itself while I'm tending to other chores. I actually have a little bit of free time now. My only regret is that I didn't buy it 6 months ago when I first saw it. I even bragged about it so much that my mother owns one now too.
