Do not buy.

Its way more hassle than its worth. The replacement brushes are extremely expensive. You can try the third party replacements to save money, but they are extremely loud. You'll end up throwing them away and buying the expensive Philips brand.
About a year after purchase, when the batteries begin to fail, there is no way to replace them. In fact, you're supposed to destroy the toothbrush itself so that you can remove and dispose of the batteries properly. When you do this, you realize that they're just simple AA batteries and that this product is designed to be used for only a year, then thrown away. There is no reason that they couldn't make these batteries replacable. I just destroyed an expensive working toothbrush because I couldn't replace the batteries.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A Good Basic Electric Toothbrush

Have used this toothbrush now for about six months and still like it! Wish it was a bit more comfortable in the handle, but overall it is a good basic electric toothbrush.

I received the philips sonicare essence as a Christmas present in 2010 and I love it! Can't go back to my old regular toothbrush! And it's so easy to use and does the work for you! I am a fill-in dental assistant with 19 years experience and I wish I would have had one of these much sooner. My teeth have never felt so clean!
Pros: easy to use, little maintenance

It's a great product! And I love that it came with a "travel" pack. I just charge it up and don't worry about it for a couple of weeks.
