Inexpensive Home Entertainment Upgrade

I bought the original Roku when it first came out to use with Netflix. Since then I've owned the Roku2, and now the Roku3. All my TVs have one. Each version greatly improved on the previous. I love the remote controls for playing games, and the ability to add so many different apps makes it very useful to my family. We don't use DVDs or BDs anymore. I've encoded all the ones we own and stream them from a computer I set up as a web server. Awesome device!
Pros: Easy-to-use Interface, Improved Audio/Video, Fast Setup, Attractive Design, Fun Games, Great Functionality
Cons: None

I use the Roku 3 to watch movies on Netflix, Blockbuster and Amazon Instant Video. My TV and my DVD player both have streaming capabilities, however, neither are as efficient as the Roku 3; meaning that I have yet to have my picture freeze during normal play black or the screen turn black when fast forwarding. I am very satisfied with the product and would highly recommend it.
Pros: Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Improved Audio/Video, Attractive Design

I have 2 Rokus and I love them. Gave one to my daugther as a gift (WiFi only) and she likes it a lot. Roku 3 has a headset that connects to the remote - I thought this was not useful... Boy, was I wrong!!! I use it frequently as to not disturb those who are still sleeping :-)
Pros: Simple Controls, Ethernet Port, Headset, Fast Setup, Attractive Design

All it claims to be

The Roku3 is everything it claims to be. This is a great little streaming device with a good selection of channels. Set up was easy and intuitive to both hardware and to the network. The controls are so simple that my 2 1/2 year old daughter actually figured out the basics without us even showing her...crazy, right? But that's how intuitively it is designed. In regards to performance the unit works rather well, only having a couple of connection issues since up and running; and those issues ironed themselves out quickly. We've only seen one involuntary reboot and had to do one manual reboot to reconnect the remote; annoying yes, but downtime was minimal on both. The user interface is extremely smooth and most of the channels are just as smooth. PBS kids channel has been having a few issues the last couple days but most others seem fine. The HuluPlus channel is smooth and works well but I have to say that the interface is much better on the computer and some other devices; it's just not that intuitive in this iteration, especially regarding the queue. Netflix is spot on as is TED, PBS, Vudu, Smithsonian, and most others I've tried. Really would like this unit to have a YouTube channel though and am still surprised it is missing. The picture clarity is great. I'm only running it on the 720p settings since that matches our current Sony, but other's I know do say the 1080 picture is clear as well. I don't get any visual issues or artifacts at any time. The audio quality is great as well, at least when not using the plug in headphones. Those headphones are actually pretty atrocious so just use or purchase a better set and you'll be good to go; nice feature to have though and we use it a good amount. As for quality of the product, it is pleasant to look at and feels solidly built. As an always-on device it is nice that it doesn't have lights that are always lit up; there's just that nice warm white little glow when the device is in use. Very low power usage and excellent up-time. Another great feature is the Roku app for your smartphone. I absolutely love this feature. When you get your Roku, download the app and enjoy! All in all we love this unit. My wife probably appreciates the lack of media PC hooked up in the living room more than she lets on. The lack of YouTube channel and a better HuluPlus interface are the only things keeping this Roku3 from a full 5 stars.
Pros: Improved Audio/Video, Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Attractive Design
Cons: Lacks Youtube, Hulu Plus Interface

For two decades we all had to bend our wrists awkwardly to point our remotes to our equipment. And of course you can't see the buttons you are pushing when you do this. With the first Roku box, Netflix solved this problem by allowing you to hold the face of the remote where you could see it while pushing buttons. Now I have the Roku 3, which does even better by using radio pulses so you don't have to point the remote at all; brilliant! That makes its low price worth the purchase all by itself, but with the Roku 3 am am getting faster operation and easier navigation. Talk about taking good care of your customers! Thank you Netflix!
Pros: Attractive Design, Improved Audio/Video, Remote Needs No Pointing, Fast Setup, Simple Controls
