Impressed!

I bought the Roku 3 to work with my Simple.TV box, but I was surprised by all of the content available. It was not hard to set up, and I've had no problems streaming from the Simple.TV box or any of the online content providers. This is connected to my bedroom TV, so I really love the WiFI remote for not having to have a direct line of sight with the box.

I purchased my Roku 3 a little over a month ago, because wanted to try and get rid of cable and the outrageous bills that I would receive from Charter, my bills always seemed to get higher, never ordered pay per view, but always more each month after 2 weeks of having the Roku 3 on just one tv, I saw that my family was watching it 90 percent of the time, so I canceled cable and purchased 3 more Roku 3 boxes, and no complaints from anyone in the family, love it, and really do not miss getting that huge cable bill each month

Great hardware but lacking content for Canadians

This player is AWESOME.  SO fast. Channels load very quickly without a blip, easy as pie to set up. Sadly in Canada you do not have the same channel choices as the USA.  This limits the players value very much.  Also the worse thing is no YOUTUBE.  I bought this so I could kill by cable but alas it seems I still have to pay that monthly Shaw bill.  Come on ROKU give us more content in Canada.

Works great, good channel selection. I had a Netgear NeoTV Prime for 6 weeks, nothing but problems. Poor picture, buffering, sound but no picture, had to hard reboot several times before it froze up and woud not operate. The Roku is a quality product and I have not had a single problem with it. Easy to set up and use. I do wish it had the abiliy to stream directly from the web.

I bought the Roku 3 last month after deciding to ditch cable TV and so glad that I did!  The Roku is the easiest and best way to do so and not lose most of the shows you love to watch.  They just added the Disney/ESPN channels this month, so now there really is no excuse for ditching cable TV.  I find that my family and I spend more quality time with the Roku.  I never owned a previous model, but this one is almost perfect.
The ease of use, WiFi remote, and fast response makes this a winner in my book.  The WiFi remote is the best thing ever!  I'm not sure why that feature has not already replaced the current IR blaster remotes that have been around for decades.  I can point almost anywhere and the Roku responds without hesitation.  The Roku box itself is the size of a wallet, which is rather shocking when you take it out the first time.  Just plug the power cord in and the HDMI cable to get started.  I run the HDMI cable to my home theater and it works just like my cable DVR.  Just make sure to place this where it can get a strong wifi signal.  It contains 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, or you can use the Ethernet port for top notch streaming if your router/modem is nearby.  I personally use the 5GHz band in my apartment and it rocks!
The Roku uses 'Channels' to bring the content to you.  The difference being that a channel can contain many different things and should be called something else (like an App).  Netflix, Amazon, PBS, Plex, Watch ESPN, HBO, etc are the big ones that everyone should add.  I currently had Amazon Prime and the ROKU is way better at streaming videos from there than my Blu-ray player.  I could never get HD signals with the Blu-ray player, but always do so with the Roku.  Sometimes it does take about 15 seconds to show the HD picture due to buffering at the beginning on most channels.  I added Netflix streaming for the Roku and it nearly completes the best combo of the bunch.  Netflix signed an agreement with Disney to provide their content in the future, so definitely worth having for many years.  The final channel that should complete your Roku is the Plex channel.  Seriously - it streams content from online websites through your computer to replace Hulu Plus in my opinion.  I tried Hulu Plus for a week, but not much on there that I cannot get on Plex and I save $8 a month.  It relies on your computer and the online channel's website, so that could be an issue sometimes.  I have a desktop that is 4 years old and I get everything in HD.  ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, etc are all on Plex.
Pros: Fast, Easy to Use and Setup, WiFi Remote, Replaces Cable TV (for the most part), various Internet Connections, Small Size, Cheap.
Cons: Gaming Remote volume buttons only control the headset jack, Roku will never power off (but neither did my cable DVR technically), Roku can freeze sometimes and reset itself (about once a week), Need Subscriptions to get the best content.
Overall, the Roku is the best thing out there for so little cost.  I got this Roku during the sale they just had and worth every penny (even without the sale).  By dropping cable TV, I will earn back the cost of the Roku next month (total of 2 months).  This seems to be the best Media Player out there for now and the foreseeable future as the company is always trying to improve the Roku.  The only thing that could match the Roku soon is the Chromecast dongle, but it has a far road to play catch up.  Buy one now!

Outstanding value and solution

I have an extensive collection of DVDs that I have puchased over the years and need to reduce them in size. While there are limited "Cloud" solutions to storing movies et al on the internet, I was really interested in a "private" solution that I would not be sharing with the world.
The new Roku 3 looked to offer the idea solution. I can use readily available software to decode and then convert DVD files to an .mp4 format and then store them on high-capacity external drives. These connect via a simple USB cable to the new Roku and provide hassle-free playback, where I don't have to jump up and change DVDs after every show.
For instance, my wife and I enjoyed a trip back in time and watched old episodes of Westerns (Gunsmoke, Rawhide) and then switched over to watch a Rockford Files episode followed by a Scarecrow and Mrs. King episode. I could have gone in and watched a Star Trek episode, an episode from Have Gun, Will Travel, or one of the other series in my collection.
Then there is the added advantage of being able to use the same box, which is very small, to pull up our local PBS affiliate, or grab newer episoded from Amazon (I have a prime account), or stream a movie from Netflix.
All of this in 1080p High Definition with closed captioning where available.
I've run into a few problems via the USB port, but after splitting up the external drive into 500 GB partitions, the problems have gone away. I have yet to figure out how to add captioning to the converted files, but for the most part, they aren't needed for these old shows.
Anyway, my wife and I are pleased with the results and the price is certainly right, even after adding the high-capacity external drive. And other thing is that USB episodes start immediately. I don't have to wait for a DVD to load and go through all those previews and FBI warnings (especially irritating since I bought the disc set).

The Roku3 is a good device that should be great!

Things the Roku3 Does Well:
- Access Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Spotify, SlingPlayer
Things the users should know BEFORE purchasing:
- Youtube is NOT directly supported
- DLNA is NOT directly supported
- Xfinity Customers will NOT have access to HBOGo or FoxNOW
- USB Drive will only play videos in MP4 format. (No dvix/xvid support)
DLNA & Youtube VERY large omissions to a media streaming device. The 3rd party workarounds are proof of this. Roku should be working to put together their own solution that has a better user experience and that is more intuitive than what is currently available.
In addition, your product is NOT as competitive as it could be. Other media streaming devices (WD TV, Seagate GoFlex TV, Popcorn Hour) all support multiple audio video codecs. If you wont natively support DLNA, then you should at least make the streamer capable of reading common A/V codecs.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Purchased one to see how we'd like it, since we're considering cutting cable. After a couple of weeks......we bought a SECOND one for the bedroom, and we are DEFINITELY going to cut our cable off. Aside from missing a few shows (NOT due to the Roku, but to licensing issues on the shows, which they're working on!), we have EVERYTHING we had, and MORE. The variety is seemingly endless, and having everything available all the time is great. It is IMPOSSIBLE to miss a show, since (for lack of a better term), EVERYTHING is DVR'ed. You have what you want, when YOU want it...not when it happens to be on.
