We cut the chord with the Roku

My wife and I were long time satellite users chained to the monthly bill. We bought an HD antenna for our local channels and a Roku for all the rest. Right out of the box it worked like a champ and took all of 5 minutes to setup. We were Roku channel surfing in no time. Now I must admit that at first glance I thought the remote was too simple to be effective but I was wrong. Simple, elegant, small and effective. I wish all of my remotes were like this. After a few months of Roku life I decided to convert my mom. For her birthday I bought her the same setup I have. She is not tech savvy but has had no problem navigating, learning and customizing her Roku. She even learned to play Angry Birds so she can join in with the grandkids when they visit! We all shake our heads at times and wonder why oh why did we ever pay a monthly satellite bill.
Pros: Fast Setup

I was looking for a better Netflix streaming device. I have used TiVo and the Western Digital HD Live streamers, but the Netflix interface is slow and lacking lots of simple functions. I was considering Apple TV because I knew of how fast the Netflix app is on that. However, I was drawn to the amount of "channels" you can add to the Roku. I also wanted a wired network port, so I went with Roku 3 (from Best Buy). Worst case, if I didn't like it, I could return it quickly to get the already-proven Apple TV. I love the Roku and really don't use anything except Netflix, and it is FAST and has the basic functions that you would expect. Yes, it doesn't integrate with TiVo so I need a dedicated HDMI port, but it is worth it. Roku is a small footprint both physically and electricity-draw wise, and I don't have any complaints about it.
Pros: Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Attractive Design, Improved Audio/Video, Netflix Is Blazing

I watch HBO GO and Netflix at our vacation home. I had thought about Nintendo WII but the salesman pointed me to the Roku 3. I was skeptical but took it home anyway. Set up was easy and I was on my way. Techy son was impressed at my progress.
Pros: Fast Setup, Simple Controls

Overall, I'm really happy with the Roku. We don't have cable or a dish, so this was a godsend. Love Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, NBC and FOX channels. Would like to use some of the other channels, but for HBOgo, you have to have...cable? What's the point of that since this was supposed to be an option instead of cable. And I don't like that we have to pay a monthly charge for limited Hallmark, or that SyFy is just clips? We were really excited to see SyFy here but they don't actually have shows. Most of the otherv channels we just don't use because the options aren't that great...I like independent movies, but a lot of these are worse than B-grade movies. It does seem very sloooooooow to load at night! A lot of interruptions when we try to watch some of the channels at night-very frustrating. Overall though, I do enjoy this and do very much recommend it
Pros: Simple Controls, Fast Setup
Cons: Loads Slowly At Night, Some Disappointing Channe

Ok, mostly I am really very happy with my Roku, and it gets increasingly more use than our cable service. That said, my unit freezes up about once a week, and I have to haul my lazy self off the couch, pull the plug, and wait for it to reboot. It's worth the grief, however. Well worth it.
Pros: Improved Audio/Video, Attractive Design, Fast Setup

Great streaming device, but...

The Roku itself is a great device. It is simple to setup and trivial to use. The remote is awesome -- it uses RF instead of infrared (so I don't have to point it at the Roku), and the built-in headphone jack is amazing. There are tons of channels available, although like cable/satellite, most of them are junk. It does have access to the better ones (Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, Vudu, etc) However, there are two main drawbacks from making this a cable killer: (1) Lack of sports content. Even if I could stream ESPN3, that would be a start. But the sports offerings are *very* limited. (2) There are no built-in parental controls, since it relies on controls inside each channel, which are also mostly non-existent. To me, that means it is fine as a novelty, but won't help me cut the cable. I realize this is also on the content providers / channels to fix, so it's not just Roku to blame. If you have young kids and actually care about what they watch, then this device is not for you. Once these two issues are resolved, there is no reason for cable / satellite to exist IMO.
Pros: Fast Setup, Simple Controls, Excellent Remote, Headphone Jack In Remote, Attractive Design
Cons: No Parental Controls, Limited sports content
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
