I Cut the Cord (to pay tv)

We got tired of spending over $100/month for DirectTV,and were uninterested in simply changing vendors to ATT or Dish, where the costs are about $100/month. So, we went with a Roku and a powered digital tv antenna, and now pay a total of $7.99/month, which is the cost of Netflix. There are only three things you don't get with Roku -- all the cable/satellite news junkie channels (highlights only), regular tv channels, and sports. Here in Los Angeles, with an indoor regular digital tv antenna , I get some 60+ normal tv channels, which satisfies my news & sports needs for free, so I didn't care. With the Roku3 you can get network news podcasts & Al Jazeera streaming news (which isn't bad), and there are ways to get CNN International & BBC International news channels, so it's good enough. The huge plus side for me is that we no longer have the satellite tv hundreds of channels of 'junk with advertising' while paying over $100/month. . With a reasonably fast internet connection (say 5 Mbps & up), we now have thousands of movies, tv shows and other content available 24/7 via the Roku & its remote control. And with a choice of wired or wireless connections, the tv can be anywhere in your home. I already had Amazon Prime, and by adding Netflix we can find entire seasons of tv shows online to view at our leisure, as well as tons of movies. In fact, we have been doing what they call 'binge viewing', where we can choose an episodic show on Netflix & watch all of the episodes one by one. Especially cool for all BBC shows I never watched. Also, the new interface on the Roku 3 is much more intuitive than the older one, and I find that wireless connectivity is better than in the earlier models.
Pros: Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Attractive Design, Improved Audio/Video
Cons: No UTube

A solid contender for Best Streaming Box

I had 2 Roku 2s already and jumped to upgrade to the 3 immediately upon release. The Roku includes the major streaming contenders in Netflix and Amazon, with many more options in channels, though the usefulness of those channels can vary based on your interests. The killer feature for me was the audio streaming through the remote - my fitness regimen consists mostly of treadmill and elliptical use and no matter what volume level I put the TV on, the treadmill will drown it out. I thought for so long that there must be a way to get the audio closer to me so I could actually hear dialogue over the treadmill, and then lo and behold, the Roku 3 is announced and the problem is solved. I use it daily and would highly recommend it.
Pros: Fast Setup, Remote Control Audio Feed, Simple Controls, Attractive Design, Improved Audio/Video

Good but not great

I have a setup that sends HDMI signals throughout the house. At times certain signals are blocked and a blue screen is all that is visible so the plug has to be taken out, system shut down and restarted. There should be another signal available in low definition on these occasions. I would recommend a former version.
Pros: Simple Controls
Cons: Can Have Conflict In Hdmi, Only Hdmi, Does Not Improve Audio/Video
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I got this because my Google TV setup was awful. I'm happy to say that I can now watch Amazon Prime and HBO very easily, almost like they are just different tv stations, and that the quality is excellent, better than what I can through the cable.
Pros: Simple Controls, High Quality Picturesoun, Fast Setup, Improved Audio/Video
