World's Smallest Video Rental Store
on July 28, 2013

The Roku 3 is the first standalone video streaming box I've owned, so I can't compare it either to other brands or to its own predecessors. So far I'm finding it to be a perfect, hassle-free way to bring services like Netflix and Hulu not only into your home but along with you anywhere you can hook into the World Wide Orwell. Since most brick-and-mortar vid stores have closed up shop, this is a good thing. Also good for the movie industry, presumably, since I rented absolutely nothing for roughly a year - between the time when that local rental chain closed and when I bought this Roku. In addition to the big video services, you can also get great free stuff like NASA TV and Live365 Internet Radio (as a Live365 DJ, it's been totally cool to be able to dial up and listen to my own station on the Roku. I about fell off my chair when I saw it there.) Those familiar with video services like Netflix already know this, but for those unfamiliar: the streaming movie services vastly eclipse what the Blockbusters and Hollywood Video chains were able to offer in terms of variety and completeness. I've come up empty on a few movie searches, but what's missing pales in comparison to what's available vs. the physical rental stores. It's bewildering, as in: "How am I going to find the time to watch everything I've put in my Faves queue?" The earbud plug directly into the remote is something that should get some kind of design award, 'cause it's just a great idea. The Roku menu interface is straightforward and generally easy to navigate, but I wish it weren't so easy to mistakenly push the remote's Home instead of Back button. They're side-by-side at the top, and if you're wanting to go from a specific movie description page back to the movie list and hit Home instead, it's a long, long haul back to where you were. A minor point, but a simple button placement issue for future models. Another thing that would be nice to have is a Subtitles button that would toggle any available subtitle menu for a given movie. Currently you can only access the subs on/off toggle at the movie's description screen, so if you forget, you have to navigate back to it. Not a big deal, and yeah, I should just get off my duff and get some more languages learned, but that's a different can o' worms. The only other negative I can think of - again a minor issue, yet still annoying - is that you cannot fast-forward or rewind in full screen. The second you hit either button, the screen jumps to that "slideshow" view with greatly reduced still image sizes. As a result it's often impossible to pick the place you're wanting to jump to, so you have to just wing it by trial-and-error. To reiterate, all negatives are comparatively minor and included as FYI and "Dear Santa" for the Roku design people, because blanket raves are generally useless as reviews; the squeaky wheel gets the grease, etc. The Roku 3 is a product I wish I'd have been able to buy ten years before I did. I could've saved myself a whole lot of wasted cash on the (generally worthless) premium cable channels, and seen a whole lot more movies I would never otherwise have had access to. As one last "Dear Santa" before I finally shut up: This is probably beyond the scope of Roku's business sphere, but English-speaking fans of foreign TV shows - particularly Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese dramas - have seriously limited options in feeding their addiction. Generally you either have to become fluent in another language (a bit of a time issue,) then buy and watch a TV series in its original language; or you have to buy one of those horrid low-rent versions they sell on Amazon that have sketchy-to-useless subtitle translations. With the demise of the International Channel/AZN-TV awhile back, there's a massive supply gap waiting to be filled for English-speaking fans seeking professionally-subtitled Asian dramas. Maybe Roku could work some contracts with a few key Asian drama producers, hire a translation and subtitling staff and start its own subscription foreign drama channel? Likely unfeasible, but it's an idea that needs to happen at some point. Supply is low and demand is high - we're starving out here... But I digress. Very happy with the Roku 3 - like I said, I wish I could've had one of these in something like Y2K. Definitely recommended, and worth the investment at twice the price.
Pros: Fast Setup, Full, Simple Controls, Movie Ratings Are A Plus, Attractive Design
Cons: No Full Screen F F Or Rew

luv the box; but remote eats batterie

Luv the box. I replaced two earlier Roku versions and both in the bedroom and the family room. Greatly improved interface & additional channels (especially like being able to access my Amazon Cloud music thru the box). Only con is the remote eats batteries when you use it for quiet listening---what I originally bought the first new box for in the bedroom. I have to replace them about every 2 weeks on that remote, but when that function isn't used they last the normal amount of time.
Pros: Improved Audio/Video, Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Attractive Design
