We have purchased (3) Roku-3 units for our home one in April, May and June of 2013. We went with a dual Satellite / Roku set-up for a month before cutting the cord all together. With 2 kids in college and 1 more next year we needed to look for ways to save money, but I know many people who have either cable or satellite and Roku set-ups for their home use. The Roku 3 is easy to install, we watched a movie within 5 minutes of opening the box. For us it came down to were ESPN and the Fox Sport package worth $90 a month with Direct TV. An unrealized aspect of the Roku system is TV viewing is now on our schedule instead of the other way around. This simple change in viewing habits has allowed our family more time (I have lost 40 lbs since April because I have time to exercise) Main channels for us are Netflix and PBS. I like that PBS includes local programming from all over the US that is not available though OTA channels. I really loved this purchase.

For the most part, it works well and is easy enough to use; however, it runs fairly hot. Which may be the reason that it randomly freezes or reboots. Once it freezes, you need to unplug it and plug it back in (no power switch). Frequency of the freezing/reboot, probably 2-3 times a week. On average, it's used about 4-5 hours a day. Really annoying that there's no official Youtube channel. Pretty much every other streamer has access to Youtube. Had I known, I probably would have picked something else. You could use Plex and such, but that's just another thing you have to have up and running. One feature that I've found extremely useful, more than I thought I would, is the headphone jack. I have three young kids, so watching after they have gone to bed, I'd have to play the volume game. Especially if I'm watching an action movie, I could be constantly increasing and decreasing the volume. With the headphones, don't need to worry about it. The feature seems to eat through batteries though.
Pros: Most Works, Headphone Output, Simple Controls
Cons: Freezes, Runs Hot Temperature, Random reboots, No Yourtube

Getting to Know You

I'm still getting to know the Roku 3. I've used it mainly for Crackle & Popcorn movies, and This Old House on PBS. I need to trial Hulu Plus, Amazon, or Netflix for sure but haven't done so yet. I'm more interested in Prime Time TV shows I've missed versus current movies since I still use Redbox for that. Overall a very good product that I'm slowly getting to know.

I already had 3 Roku's of various models throughout the house and wanted 1 more for the only tv without one. I debated saving $20 and going with one of the older models, but boy I'm glad I didn't. It's much snappier and the new interface is terrific, but the feature that I love the most which I didn't give a second thought is the headphone jack on the remote control. Listening on headphones in my bed while my wife sleeps is a nightly occurrence and something I couldn't imagine being without.

In my opinion, the Roku is a great price for what you get and is intuitive to use. My one critque is that it will freeze up quite often and then I will have to power cycle it to reset it and work again.
Pros: Attractive Design, Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Improved Audio/Video
