Roku 3 Ownership and Review

Basic and simple design, easy setup, visual quality, and reasonable choices for Internet Apps a plus. However, the Roku 3 (I do not own other roku products) has issues playing a third of the multimedia Mp4 and Mkv multimedia formatted videos that all my other streaming, laptop, and pc devices handle without any issues. In other words, 30 % or more of my Mp4 and Mkv library files fail to play of the Roku 3, even after updating the firmware, while those same files play perfectly on every other device I own. I even tested those same files on other individual's systems without error. There are obvious bugs and/or issues in the Roku 3 codec application and playback. Until tis is resolved, I would not recommend this device to anyone with multimedia libraries.
Pros: Attractive Design, Simple For Most, Fast Setup, Simple Controls
Cons: Issues With Codec Playbac, Does Not Improve Audio/Video
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I am very impressed with the new Roku 3. Everything I do is faster on this new unit over my older Roku. (Mind you that one was only passed on to some one else, still works fine.) It has an attractive design that's so small it could be easily hidden, but it doesn't look like an eye sore, even if left out in plain view. If your looking for a streaming media player, the Roku 3 is the one you should be getting.
Pros: Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Attractive Design

this unit is fast, and plays netflix virtually flawlessly. I got this unit because my Samsung C6900 streaming Bluray player will not play Netflix without having a framesync issue, but this is a Netflix specific problem since Hulu plus and other channels play well on it. Anyway, comparisons aside, this is a nice piece of kit. One of the best channels you can add is PLEX, which allows you to add a whole lot more free high quality content that is not available through Roku directly, as well as play stuff stored on your PC. This is good since many of the free channels have limited offerings. Now as of typing this, I should mention that the unit has a few issues that I have encountered. The first is that if you add a screensaver channel, you cannot delete it without a factory reset since there is no option in the menu to do this. I believe a firmware update would fix this. (Currently 5.0) The second is that the unit has locked up on me once requiring me to cycle power. This happened while waking it from sleep mode, using an infrared remote (more on that later). I believe this happened because I did not give it time to "wake up" properly and started hammering the remote keys rapidly. The unit is capable of receiving both infrared and wireless remote signals, but comes with a wireless remote only. For most folks, this is not an issue, but if you use a universal remote, you're going to have to buy a Roku IR remote to program it. I have a URC-R40 and although it does contain a Roku preset code, it is an old one, so the replay button is missing (the replay button is reletively new). The unit will pickup IR signals at other angles than straight on and I have mine behind the set, at the top, pointing up and it works fine. I cannot speak to the wireless capabilities, since I have it and my Bluray player hard wired to my network via a network switch, but wired on a 10/100 cat5 cable plays without a hiccup. This unit DOES NOT SUPPORT DLNA, but you can have a somewhat codec limited approximation of it if you install PLEX. Wild Media server serves more media types, but not to the Roku since it has no DLNA capability. Did I mention PLEX? :)
Pros: Improved Audio/Video, Simple Controls, Attractive Design, Fast Setup
Cons: No DLNA

I love the fact I can log onto Netflix and Amazon without having to "rent" a cable box. Plus I get other channels that I love, Smithsonian, PBS, etc. Cons: You version 2 games don't work with version 3 player. I keep getting this: "HDCP Unauthorized. Content disabled." When I switch from TV to Roku. I have to go into Roku settings and set the display to 720p and then back to 1020p to clear the Content Disabled screen. Thought they would have fixed this by now.
Pros: Easy to set up, Simple Controls, Improved Audio/Video
Cons: Verson 2 Games Don't Work, "hdcp Unauthorized Conte

Love searching across various streaming services, but need to add more. The only 2 improvements I would make is adding premium channels to the searches (Showtime, HBO, etc) and allowing the use of headphones at the same time as the home theater system, rather than just one or the other.
Pros: Attractive Design, Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Very Fast Searches

The cable and satelite offers 100 or more channels, when we really watch only a few. We like Fox news and the Catholic EWTN. EWTN live is available with Ruku. We can pick interesting events by Fox and watch without annoying commercials. There are free movies which we have seen years ago, but we can enjoy. The cost is the one time purchase of ROKU plus a few dollars for other things. We have an antenna for local stations. Wonderful!
Pros: Fast Setup, Simple Controls
