Loving the ROKU

After much nagging on the part of my son, we purchased the ROKU 3. It has been a great treat and has saved us he annoyance of forgetting to return movies, etc. And for all those seasons of Downton Abbey that we missed, we've been able to enjoy that and other series.
Pros: Attractive Design, Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Improved Audio/Video

Lack of Content Updates

I use it to watch Netflix and Amazon Prime. The controls are intuitive and navigating is fast. On the negative side, there is barely any new content coming out, and what does come out is basically garbage. Where are are the 3rd parties coding for new channels that are worth anything? ALso, streaming through Plex is a joke. You have to encode/re-encode all your videos into a format that Plex likes. I continue to use my smart blu ray to stream my personal movie collection, cause I do not have to encode anything. This product is worth about 50$.

i had the Roku 2, this seems a little faster but no improvement especially when you add the toslink optical switch i had to buy. controller design is not better. overall, the Roku 2 was better.
Pros: Fast Setup
Cons: Poor Design, Does Not Improve Audio/Video, No Optical Audio

Roku 3 Audio Design

A serious design mistake is the muting of main speakers when earphones are plugged in. My wife and I like to watch movies together, but my hearing is poorer than hers so I use the earphones to amplify the sound that I hear. She, on the other hand, wants to use our main speakers, but this is impossible since they are muted. There should be a second earphone jack that allows BOTH the phones and speakers to be live at the same time!

Cons: Does Not Improve Audio/Video, Poor Audio Design

I've had the Roku 3 for several months now, and use it daily. My other video streaming options are an AppleTV, XBOX 360, and PS3. What it came down to for me was the snappiness of the UI. Booting, searching, and viewing the content I'm looking for is happens fastest on the Roku. But nothing's perfect. The Roku Channel Store is chock full of content providers, and that's great. What bothers me is the UI capabilities given to channel creators seems... limited. Also, everything I watch buffers for 5 seconds. Can you just show me a pretty 'Buffering' animation for 5 seconds and start the thing in crystal clarity? Big thanks and props to the Roku Team.

Beyond exceptional in every way

I am a Roku 2 owner but bought the Roku 3 solely for the headphone jack, which allows me to roam around the house and still listen to video I'm watching if I happen to be out of viewing range. Boot time is much faster than the Roku 2. Navigation is easy.
