I decided to cut the cord with cable.. Very small investment for my Roku.. The overall savings is amazing.. Purchase a Roku for $99.00 t Tax and a $20.00 antenna and save over $1000.00 a year.. Make the break from cable and watch wonderful movies and documentaries..

Works great! Great picture. Great operability. Not great when I add channels that require me to enter my cable company to watch them... when my cable company isn't listed. Sigh.

...but this little box is quite amazing to say the least. Not only does it give you access to a lot of paid content (I subscribe to Hulu), but it also gives you a few great free options as well. The History Channel and AE are 100% free channels and give you quite a bit of on-demand HD content. Combine that with Hulu and we were able to 'cut the cord' so to speak. A lot of people think that Hulu's TV selection is rather limited, but it's really not. No, it doesn't have any and every show you could possible want, but you will find many shows you didn't even think you could watch on TV anymore. I kid you not, I was watching Xena the Warrior Princess the other day... Guess I had a nostalgic moment there, but point is they have stuff like that, and not just 1 or 2 episodes but the entire series. We only pay for internet now and cut our monthly bill by about 25% from having the internet/phone/tv combo deal and get a lot more. We have good cell phones, so who really needs a home phone nowadays? We also invested in a $30 over-the-air HDTV antenna and are able to get most of the big local TV channels (Fox, ABC, etc) for free. Oh, another great thing is this channel called the 'The Nowhere Man' that lets you watch MOST downloaded content via a USB hard drive at up to 1080p resolution. It isn't a replacement for the dedicated media players like the Asus O!Play, but it does a nice job with most of the stuff I throw at it. I think honestly it just doesn't have the codecs to play everything - which is ok because I didn't buy it for that.
Now for a bit of technical talk: Yes, there are many, many devices that support Hulu and Netflix now, but the problem is the wireless. Xbox, PS3, and most of those types of devices only have single band wifi capability and they really aren't that fast. Roku 3 is dual-band and is designed to be very fast for streaming. Combined with our wireless N dual-band router, we are able to get most Hulu content streamed in full 1080p with 0 hiccups. We have a 50/25mbps connection, but you could probably get 1080p on a 10-15mbps downstream connection over wireless as long as it is wireless N.
Bottom line, we bought our Roku 3 for $90 and it will pay for itself in less than 4 months. Can't beat that right?

Bye-bye Cable "Silver" Package!
on March 4, 2014

Why did I wait so long? After one evening of poking around Roku3 offerings and using my Netflix and Amazon Prime memberships I called my cable provider and downgraded from the "Silver" package (included HBO/Showtime) to extended basic saving me $30/month. I wish is Doggie Channel wasn't $10/month and more local news were added.

Absolutely love my Roku. Does everything I want. I especially love the fact that I can plug my earphones into the remote! But it does go through batteries quickly doing that!
