Everything is subscription

I bought this to watch old TV shows on Hulu for free, like I do on my computer. Unfortunately, in order to watch Hulu on the Roku you have to pay for a subscription. As a matter of fact, you have to pay for any content. Of course, there are free trial periods, but that's it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Unacceptable Remote

The streaming is outstanding.
The remote is like a product from another company. Its cheap looking plastic in bright colors, and it gobbles batteries at an astonishing rate. There is no way to control the streaming device itself without the remote or an app for your smart phone.

Not worth the money

I bought mine to take back to Barbados where I live sometime of the year. The programming is poor outside of the US. You get an overseas version of Netflix - up dated to 2011 - No Amazon on demand and a bunch of "hand me down" television stations that aren't worth watching.

Roku is a convenient way to gather instant viewing, but the flipside is that you have to pay for almost every service, separately. PBS channel is the only thing we use because it's free. I think Roku should consider including with the purchase a free subscription to something useful. Or maybe a package that includes all the services for a very reasonable monthly amount. My negative review is not only because you have to pay but because they are quite sneaky about it, and you think you will get more free viewing options because the "channel" is free. But then within the channel you have to pay. It's ridiculous.

Neat little box but not for me

I received this for Christmas and when I finally got around to hooking it up I had to register it on a web site AND provide CC information - I almost tossed it in the trash right there but decided to give it a fair try. Once I had it registered I discovered that it seemed like anything I wanted to watch cost money AND I couldn't access my media server. I can get on-line content through my TV so this was pretty much redundant.
After discovering this I hooked my WD TV Live Plus back up and the Roku is back in it's box...
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

90-day warranty is unacceptable when it breaks

We happily streamed for 5 months, now the Roku crashes. $20/month for a Roku box is not a good value.
