I have had 3 media streaming devices for at least 3 years now. I stream movies, pictures, music in nearly any file format from my NAS devices to 3 media centers in the house. The other channels I stream are Netflix and Youtube. All three have worked wonderfully, but I wanted to try something new. I chose the Roku 3 based on the reviews, without really reading the reviews, and I liked the small size because I was going to hang it on the back of the wall mounted TV. Big mistake on my part! When I bought the "streaming" Roku 3, I was excited about a new device and its "high rated" ability to stream my file collections from my NAS devices. I quickly learned that it will not do that via direct DLNA. It will only stream movies via one of its "channels" like Plex. Compared to direct DLNA streaming, Plex is sloooowwww and the quality of stream Plex provides is extremely degraded compared to the direct DLNA streams from the WDTV Live Boxes. Plex or Roku fails to play half the files in my collection, mostly mkv files. It also does not stream 3D. I stream bluray ripped full 1080p HD 3D movies via the WDTV Live boxes. And why is there no Youtube channel for Roku. I really fail see how this device has earned such great reviews. Got it yesterday, returning it today. Ordered another WDTV Live, which does everything I wanted the Roku 3 to do and more.
Pros: Fast Setup, Easy Return To Amazon, Attractive Design
Cons: No Direct Dlna, Misleading Marketing, No youtube

I did a lot of research before buying and it's amazing how hard it is to find out exactly what this does. This isn't TV and from what I have seen, not a substitute for it. For TV, there are only a few options and if the content you want is there, you can only watch back so far in some cases. PBS keeps their shows up to date, but the others often don't (like Smithsonian). For movies, most of the channels are pay (like Netflix) and the only free one I have watched so far actually pauses the movie to insert commercials!!! The selection is limited. I do like the fact that, for Amazon prime, it streams instantly. On my TiVo, I have to wait for it to download. Most channels are STEREO, not 5.1 or greater. If I rated based on expectations, I'd only give it 3 stars. If I rate on what it actually is now that I know, I'd give it 4. It does what it does well, but what it does isn't all that great.

Software bug when using with sound bar

I have a Sharp Aquos 70 inch tv and sound bar and several times I have had to unplug the Roku and my router in order to restore sound to the sound bar. Needless to say this has been a pain.

I have had my Roku 3 for six weeks and it only worked for two. After streaming fewer than a dozen programs, I was suddenly getting "unauthorized content" errors on everything I tried to watch, though the audio was playing. This was on the FREE content, mind you, not subscriptions. I tried to restart it, but the errors persisted. I did 4 factory resets and each time I tried to do the setup it froze at the language prefs. It would not respond to the factory remote nor the remote on my mobile. My husband stepped in and did who-knows-what so that it is now responsive again, but now each thing I choose to watch loads and loads but will not play. My Amazon subscription channel at least timed out telling me I had a poor connection - actually at that moment I was pulling down 44 mbps, and the Roku network reading was "excellent" so there's that - but the free content loads to infinity. One time I walked away and came back an hour later and it was still hung up. This is the worst device I have ever tried to use. I am going back to the PS3 because the disruptive 3 updates per week is far less irritating than this little piece of "equipment".

I have watched 2 movies since I bought Roku 4 months ago. There just isn't anything really worth watching unless you are into old b movies or TV reruns from 10 years ago.
Pros: Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Attractive Design
Cons: Does Not Improve Audio/Video
