I have been looking at the Roku 3 for some time, I had a PC with Plex and XBMC hooked up to my TV and my thought was what could a Roku offer that my current setup does not. First and foremost was ease use, no constant fiddling with settings and updates, "channels" working one day then not the next with no clear way of fixing the problem. Picture quality, I though the video played from my PC to the TV was good, until I got the Roku that is, night and day difference in the quality. My Fiance loves it, she is not into technology so for her to actually enjoy using it says a lot. The amount of content available is staggering, most of it is nothing we would watch but there is almost certainly something there for everyone. The only improvement I would personally make is the addition of a CBS app that actually has full episodes and an app for Dishanywhere. I realize that it is up to the providers to make the decision to include a channel on the Roku for their content but surely someone at Roku could say to them "Look, people want this, they want to see your stuff" and sway them into it.
Overall I highly recommend the Roku to anyone who is thinking of dropping cable or satellite tv, it doesn't have all of the content available on regular tv but with a Hulu subscription and maybe Amazon Prime or Netflix it has enough to keep you entertained for a good long while.

I am really enjoying my easy to set-up and easy to use Roku 3. I had another similar type of player some time ago and this is so much easier to use!

I received this as a Christmas gift. At first I was wondering what I was going to do with a hockey puck. Upon further inspection I realized it was much, much more. I'll be the first to admit I'm not as tech savvy as I once was but my Roku3 installed extremely easy and it's been a great addition to our television viewing.

We bought our new Roku 3 at Christmas (2014). We have another (second) residence which has high speed internet but the cable is not great. We have HBO and Showtime at our primary residence. The Roku 3 allows us to "sling" the cable to our 2nd home. Understanding that most folks do not have a second home, this is probably not applicable generally. However, for those who do, it's great.

easy plug-&-play but setup is arduous

You'll need an extra cable, which they don't tell you in the ad for the product. Roku plugs right in and operates, but needs a MULTITUDE of setup operations consisting of moving the cursor to individual letters/numbers in a keypad and pushing "OK" for every single one; and this is required for almost every channel. The channels we would use most require extra payment, either per year or per play, another downside. The picture is fine on our moderate-size screen, and it doesn't interfere with our other channels that we get over the air with rabbit ears [hey, yeah, we do that!]

I received my Roku as a Christmas gift. I had to install a wireless modem to get it to work. I really enjoy being able to view movies, news, TV shows anytime I want, and am able to pause or exit and return. I don't know how long this technology has been out, but I suspect this will put an end to Cable TV & Satellite dishes very soon. It seems to be more intuitive than what I would like. I would rather have the option of having it choose similar music/movies/shows - be able to turn that feature off and on. I understand that the more I use it, the better the suggestions will be - and that may resolve it for me. I haven't experienced any issue with the streaming of the content at all. Good show Roku!

My "smart" TV has never worked well. With the Roku I am able to steam any and all content I ever wanted. It is extremely easy to set up and use. You may even consider canceling your "cable".
