Have had our Roku 1 year. We have saved money going from full cable service to Roku. It offers plenty of channels. Many of which are unwatchable or cost extra for their content. So we just pay extra for Netflix and Hulu Plus mostly. I've had issues with the unit freezing up occasionally at an inopportune time. Also can be slow which can either be the unit or my wi-fi. Overall we're happy with Roku.

Ease of setup, attractive & small device, works quickly (no lag time), overall GREAT bang for the buck!! Only things I would improve is the lag time of movie releases & lack of complete tv series available...

My Roku 3 performs great and I have had zero issues since purchased a month ago. The only things I don't like is the quality of their HD and I had been used to with another carrier is nowhere even close, the movies and programming are at least a season old, and there are thousands of things to watch with no way to save and reference where the programs you like are located. It has a ways to go to get to where I would really like it but it is much cheaper the cable or any of the dish providers.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

There are many reasons why I am pleased buying Roku. Here are a few; I free up my computer to watch movies, no more expensive cable/satellite bills and Roku 3 is easy to use.

Lots of services, but get a Roku 2 instead

I bought this to have Plex, Hulu Plus, and Netflix in the living room. I have plenty of devices that do most of these, but not all, so Roku is an easy choice. I have a Roku 2 XD (from 2012 or so), which works great. I've heard that Roku 3 offers a significantly faster processor and ability to play games. The processor sounds nice, but I don't particularly care about the games.
I was immediately very underwhelmed by the Roku 3. Not that it's a bad product. It's perfectly adequate for its duties. It's just that there is no good reason to get this over a Roku 2, which is sometimes $30 cheaper, maybe more. It has a faster processor than the Roku 2 and appears to get some apps first, like YouTube, but I don't know that makes much of an impact. The only moment where processing power showed a difference was using YouTube, which is a clunky experience to begin with. Outside of that, every other aspect runs similarly to me.
The remote also is a major step down from the very basic "standard" IR based Roku remote. The small thing of moving the OK button from the center of the D-pad to just under it seems small, but made a huge difference in using the remote. It felt less intuitive for some reason. I know it's small, but it made a big impact when I was reaching for it in with an awkward move every time. Also, the buttons are very mushy and feel like a really bad store brand console controller. It gets old very fast.
Again, it's not a bad product, but I don't see much of a reason to spend the extra money on this over the Roku 2, or even the 1 if you hate the RF remote as much as I do.
