Some channels require cable subscription.

This purchase was for a 2nd unit for our bedroom as we made the decision to cancel our cable service. Roku offers plenty of entertainment for our needs - Netflix, Amazon Prime, Acorn TV - and we gladly pay for our subscriptions to these channels. We also watch other channels which are at no cost but not free of commercials. My disappointment is that in order to watch NatGeo and A&E (so far, these are the only 2 we have come across), you must have cable service which defeats the whole purpose. We would have rated the Roku with 5 stars had it not been for the apps requiring cable service. In general, we are quite pleased with the unit and how fast the connections are.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Marvellous little gadget

I bought the Roku 3 to enjoy a wide-screen display of a streaming service for which I already paid a monthly fee. The device exceeds my expectations. Other apps on Roku (such as Netflix) load faster and are mode glitch-free than when accessed via my Smart-TV's built-in processor. Only complaint so far: Pandora app should be improved to allow scroll-back to review playlist and rate songs.

Don't be afraid of technology. Set-up is a breeze, and I assure you; you will become addicted to your Roku, and all the great movies and tv you'll be streaming in no time. Bring your tv to the next level. No more being at the mercy of program directors, and tv stations that show the same shows and movies all day long. With your Roku, you're the program director. Watch what you want, when you want!

For the Hearing Impaired/Deaf.... not so good.

I bought the best ROKU model available in hopes that it had features to assist with closed captioning. I'm profoundly deaf. My wife is a computer illiterate and I figured that ROKU would be the best route for her to ween use off cable TV. We moved to a new home and have decided not to order CableTV with our internet package. I am also given to understand that TV shows that have been aired with their required CC must also be streamed over internet with CC.
You've got the picture now, right?
Let me tell you..... almost every soul I've contacted in the past 15 years (on this quest to get CC on internet steaming and on the airlines when flying) is not hearing impaired and hasn't the slightest interest to push CC. This is a fact. CC is not a priority although the technology is there and there is a need from both hearing and hearing impaired. I don't care how good your hearing is: you need CC in bars/airports/hospitals or anywhere else where a lot of people talk or you don't want to disturb. And simply, it is the right thing to do.
We have the ability to provide a deaf person the ability to wear glasses and read what is said to him by the person standing in front of him. Imagine it. You're deaf, you're standing infront of the teller at the bank. You're wearing a pair of glasses and you asked a question. The teller replies and you read the reply that shows just below the person's head. We have these glasses in the movie theaters. We have voice to text technology. We have powerful microcomputers that fit into very small places. WHY NOT????
So why can't ROKU come up with a system that allows a deaf individual the ability to list only programmes that have validated CC (some programmes say they have CC but don't). Is it too much to ask? I'm not asking every programme be CC'd. I know they will drag their tails for the next 50 years on this (CBS is one). But is it asking too much for some filtering option for the hearing impaired so we don't have to spend so much time looking for CC programmes on ROKU? This ROKU can do. Will they? Is there anyone on ROKU management who is deaf. There's your answer.
That's my beef. Everything else seems fine. It works. It's easy. It does a good job to ween you off CableTV.... but it is not effective in the CC department. And with CC in mind I shall rate the chart.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Bought this and was able to start watching with no problems. Works great. Mainly bought it to watch jw.org but have enjoyed some of the other content as well. Easy to use.

We had the roku 1 it was baring used in are bedroom now we put a roku 3 in the living room it is so awesome the amazing loading speed
And the headphone set up on the remote is great as I work nights and
I don't wake up the whole house when I watch tv this device is highly recommended
