I have 2 of these. Tried the streaming stick but it was too slow. I absolutely love this thing and will never go back to cable

the ease of installing was 123 even though my father can't grab the concept of using the back button!! So I have to watch with him or set him up with what ever movie he wants to watch. I love the ease of opperation and that it responds quickly.

I bought my Roku3 about a month ago and have been pleased with it. There are many viewing options, and on balance, it is better than any other platform of this type. it has more viewing and program options, and is less expensive overall than cable or satellite service. It has not quite progressed to the point of being a total substitute for cable or satellite, but it is certainly much further down that path than any of the competition.

Bought a Roku HD a few months back just to try it out. Worked very well but then I bought a new tv and a new Roku 3. This is the best move that I have made. It has worked great since day one. Much faster than earlier models. Job well done.

Excellent potential but some content disappoints

I love the Roku itself. The device is easy to set up and use (and I'm not a technophile), gets excellent reception from my wi-fi (when my laptop struggles to get 3 bars in the same location), never lags or buffers, and is conveniently small. I also love the "channel" that allows me to play my own content on the Roku from a USB drive.
The selection of channels is vast, and to be honest, I haven't had time to sort through it all yet. But a trend I've observed on multiple "free" channels is that I'm only able to watch the first two minutes or so of most programs before they inexplicably give an error message and shut down. I assume that a subscription is required to view the full programs, but the error messages don't explicitly say this and are entirely unhelpful.
In other cases, channels don't even offer a subscription service, but some content still inexplicably fails to play. I haven't been able to determine why.
If you're looking for paid services, there are plenty available (Hulu, Amazon, Netflix, etc.). I've also found lots of niche content, which can be fun and interesting. So far, I haven't found as much high-quality free content as I would have liked, and searching through the myriad of channels for something you like can be a time-consuming endeavor. But overall, the Roku 3 has still been a worthwhile purchase.
