Being a big Apple TV user for years, and now working to get away from the high costs of Dish (and other providers) I followed a friend's suggestion and bought a Roku 3 for my main center. I am very pleased with the overall ease of use and performance of the unit, although a robust manner of connecting to my own video server when away from home would be nice. I have also added Simple.TV. I am pleased with the Roku's performance when used with Simple.TV - once I figured out the HDCP problems experienced at first. Most of the improvements I would like to see are probably better addressed to content providers; however, one major improvement for Roku to consider. How about a networkable, multi-output, multi-tuner, PVR-like model?
I would recommend this to a friend!

Would have been great if you coud specify ip and dns settings with wireless connection. As of right now only option is dhcp. Also do not like the fact you must set up an account on their website and enter credit card info before you can even use the box

I had been accessing Netflix through my BlueRay player, but have an Amazon Prime membership, too, and it seems I can't have both. This is why I bought the Roku. Netflix has a snazzier interface through Roku, and loads much faster and has better resolution. Amazon works great, too. Once you get past the main 4-5 providers (Blockbuster, Redbox, Hulu, and some other rental sites), the content is just okay. SyFy's app doesn't have programming, only supplemental stuff. There's also Plex, which lets me stream videos from my computer, which is awesome. Love the little box - it was easy to set up and to use.

I've had it for a month now and have gone thru 14 batteries in the remote too much Angry Birds, only other trouble is the audio levels between different channels.

Easy set-up, good service

We bought the Roku 3 because we don't have satellite or local TV and my football-loving husband was getting tired of dropping in on suspecting relatives every Sunday afternoon. ;) The set-up was super easy with an HDMI cable, although I did have a minor freak-out when the remote wouldn't work. I went to change the batteries I found the reset button which prompted the remote to sync with the Roku - voila! Everything worked perfectly. There is a wide selection of channels available, although not all of them are free. Some channels require a subscription, some require a password from our satellite provider (which we don't have...which is why we bought the Roku in the first place...), some channels are a pay-per-movie service. So, not as free as we had hoped, but it still satisfies our TV cravings.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This is how roku works: if you want to watch movies or tv shows that are made less than 30 years ago, you should be willing to pay subscription costs. If you only want one channel or occasional movies, then roku is cheaper than cable tv. If you want more than five channels, cable/dish tv is definitely the cheaper way to go.

The Roku 3 works well. Good variety of media to select from. I think we'll have a good time with it.
Setup is interesting, and one simply has to feel their way through it. Not the best for one's first Roku, but if this is your second or third. You're probably used to this.
The surprise was that the Roku 3 becomes a wireless access point. It does advertise itself and apparently can be logged into with a password. I'll need to determine that password and change it. This is a potential source of security problems.
Eventually I would like to shut down the access point feature as it interferes with the existing wireless network. When I start hearing about slow or no wireless internet, there is a problem as the household depends upon the network.
Did change the WiFi channel, but the Roku 3 followed and interfered with the new channel. Didn't see an option to turn off the WiFi or reduce power. Which could also solve the password problem.
Thus, the Roku 3 is unplugged when not in use. We need the wireless network. However, this unit was a gift and I would like to use the box. Over the next few weeks, I'll look for solutions and update this review.
