Diversify, or at least offer some compelling reason for the product to exist. This product offers no unique selling point. It's the same content and functionality offered by most new TV's, Smart Phones, Tablets, Game systems, computers, set top boxes, DVR's, and apparently google eyewear. This product offers the consumer the unique opportunity to spend money on a device that allows them to spend money on content that they can get from so many other places while adding more clutter to your tv cabinet. There is no reason to buy games on this device, they are awful. Navigation and the UI are snappy but navigating content through this menu system using a remote control is outdated. It's too confusing for people who are low tech, and that seems to me, the target audience. Finally it comes off as a AppleTV knock off without the intrigue.
Pros: Fast Setup
Cons: Non Essential
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Roku delivers the goods...

The Roku entertainment streaming device is very nice. I like the compact size, and the remote control that operates it. The device itself has never malfunctioned in the two years that I have owned it. The content has always been up and available. I would rate Roku as highly reliable.
The plus of the remote is that it is limited (a good thing) to a few buttons. Nothing like the standard universal remote or the cable TV version. However, there is one slight problem. Searching is tedius at best being forced to use the alpha grid instead of voice operated search (other devices offer this). So Roku needs to upgrade the search capabilities.
Programming options are very good. The device will as mentioned in some reviews facilitate Netflix. That is no big deal as most toasters will be streaming Netflix soon no doubt. However, Roku provides the ability to stream tons of channels. It makes room for the big companies (ABC, CNN etal), but also the lessor known and idiosyncratic content providers as well (Lots of SyFi, Horror and other often ignored geners).
I also like that internet based content providers are represented. NBA League Pass works great on Roku. PlayOn, a net based content provider is also available. There are also apps on Roku that allow for the viewing of your computer files such as videos and photographs.
So I would say that Roku is a fine start to the wide world of streaming. The direction is rapidly changing. I personally believe that standard cable television is on the way out. I've seen a few reviews on here regarding content prices for the providers that 'rent' movies or channels. I think that has little to do with Roku, as the content providers are vast. Many provide channels are free of charge and offer quality content (although I am sure there are commercial aspects to them).
I would recommend this to a friend!

from Las Vegas,
I wanted this device for years until I got one. Then I was deeply disappointed in the Roku 3. 1. I needed to have a credit card to set up? Seriously? That's strike one. Lucky I had one. 2. Not much support for videos already owned. You can play them but no thumbnail of the video, no way to check IMDB for the title like you can in WDTV Live. No way to sync video to sound like you can in WDTV Live. Just a waste of 100 dollars. The only worthwhile feature is the earphone that plugs into the controller. Beyond that, I felt like I was taking a step backward. After about 2 months of trying to ignore these glaring weaknesses, I returned it. Now that I know the product, I no longer have to wonder of what could have been.
Pros: Attractive Design, Simple Controls
Cons: Unfocused, Designed To Sell Product, Credit card required, Antique Technology
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I bought the roku 3 to run Netflix on my tv. there is no power button so everytime I touched the box it was hot. I always have to unplug it because it wouldn't turn on Netflix, a message would always pop up that it was Netflix having the issue, but if I unplugged it and turned it back on it would work. unfortunately I had passed the 15 day return policy and now I am stuck with it.
Pros: Fast Setup, Simple Controls, Attractive Design

The channels don't really update. Same material over and over. Most movie channels are B-movies at best.
