Roku: A Study In Superfluity

Next year, I just might buy myself a nice wall clock for Christmas. We have TONS of time-keeping devices in our house but at least a clock is cheaper than a Roku.
Since video stores have gone the way of the local blacksmith shop, we purchased this curious little device for Christmas so that we would have some way to watch recent movies in the comfort of our humble abode.
There are currently 122 movie channels listed with the Roku Channel Store. 122!!! Wow!!! And the movie choices!!! Selections such as Evil Brain From Outer Space, Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks and Attack of the Puppet People (in 3D, no less)!!! I could spend hours on end watching such classics on my Roku, but my television service provider just started offering true video-on-demand with many recent quality releases.
I should mention all the other apps and features on my Roku - screensavers (like the ones on my computer), a USB port to plug my flash drive in so I can listen to my music and look at my photos (like the USB port on my computer and like the one on my smart TV), games (like on my computer), news and sports channels (not live, but almost as good as what’s on TV), and other apps (like the ones I already had available on my smart TV).
I must say as well, that I am seriously considering becoming a Christian so that I can enjoy the plethora of Religion and Spirituality channels (currently 140 of them; the largest selection of any category in the Roku Channel Store). But I suppose I could just go to church instead.
For now, our Roku is still a nice novelty, and I check the channel store occasionally for something worthwhile to watch (we Canadians have apparently fewer choices on our Roku as our American friends).
However, if the selection does not improve, I might consider gift-wrapping it next year and giving it to someone as a nifty paperweight. Who couldn’t use another paperweight?

My second Roku purchase

I installed my first Roku 2 years ago and used it for Netflix and Huluplus. Had to give up DISH when I moved last year and grew tired of fighting with AT&T all the time. Finally, cut the cable and am very happy. Moved old mid-price Roku to bedroom tv - it sometimes needs rebooting. It's not as responsive, but it's ok. The new Roku is really great. Picture is great, responds well to skipping back or whatever. Very happy with it. Lots of free channels. Also bought a digital antenna - not having the best luck with that. Buy the Roku and cut the cable!
Pros: Simple Controls, Improved Audio/Video, Attractive Design, Fast Setup

Good while it worked

My unit stopped working after about 2 months. For the 2 months that it worked, it was nice to watch movies via Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Pros: Attractive Design, Simple Controls, Fast Setup

My initial impression of the Roku 3 was great, other than having to enter credit card info when I didn't want any pay channels. However I quickly had Netflix, Amazon, and Plex set up and was greatly enjoying the easy interface and quiet hardware. However, after only 2-3 weeks, the Roku stopped responding to input from the remote. After trying to restore the device to factory settings, it shows the animated Roky boot screen, then displays black screen.
Pros: Simple Controls, Attractive Design
Cons: Doesn't Last

Like AppleTV but with less content.

I bought this hoping to replace or augment my Apple TV and man was I disappointed. Just a bad user interface mixed with less content. I wish the UI/UX was cleaner and I wish there was more content and a TiVo like interface.
Pros: Attractive Design
Cons: Too Little Content, Does Not Improve Audio/Video

The angry birds game is nice but...

It was easy to set up, but I could not find an app that played a lot of different formats. I have 2 WD Tv Live boxes and they play the majority of the video formats out there right out of the box.
Pros: Angry Birds For The Kids
Cons: Lack Of Format Support

This product is god awful. AQfter purchasing a Roku 3, I wasn't left with anything more than I already had. I had to buy an additional streamer to get youtube specifically and use my blue ray as my main streaming player. Do not buy this!!!
Pros: Was Easy To Set Up, A Complete Waste, Not Very Useful
Cons: Does Not Improve Audio/Video, Poor Design, Worst Streaming Device On
