Don't buy the cheap junk. Roku's the real deal.

When I first decided to buy a streamer, I bought the inexpensive one, even thought the clerk told me Roku was more reliable. Big mistake. I was back in the store the next day to trade up. Roku is more reliable and easier to use. Buy this brand.

Frustrating experience

I bought my first Roku a couple months ago and found that it would not connect to my ethernet network. I had a TV, BlueRay player, and Tivo all connected to the ethernet switch, but the Roku would not connect. (And none of those other devices EVER failed to connect or lost the connection. For years.) I connected it via wireless network instead. Initially it connected, but within an hour of use it dropped the connection and refused to re-connect. I unplugged the device, then let it reboot. It would not connect. After another reboot it did connect, but by the next day lost the connection again. (I have a very strong wireless signal and no other devices have a problem with it.) I searched the Internet and found that my experience was similar to that of many other users. Perhaps I received a bad unit? I returned it and had a replacement sent.
The replacement refused to connect via ethernet, but did connect via wireless, for short time. Rather than send it back again, I spent several hours on the web trying to find a solution. (Yes I had downloaded the latest firmware.) I found many suggestions, most of which involved changing router settings, including the DNS and a ping setting. I found and changed those settings, rebooted everything, and tried again. It took several iterations, but finally the Roku would hold the wireless network connection except when unused for a day or so. I just got used to setting up the connection again whenever I haven't used it for awhile.
All of this makes it too complicated for my wife to use, so she's pretty unhappy with the purchase. If I hadn't already made this purchase, I would definitely buy an alternative like the Amazon Fire; it can't be worse than this and likely would connect to my network without any of this drama. I've never seen a worse device than the Roku 3 in terms of ability to connect to and maintain a network connection.
The user interface is fine, and speed seems good. Now if it just worked like any other network-connected device ever made...
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Product

Purchased Roku 1 to work with a VERY seldom used 'box' RCA 52" HDTV with no HDMI. This unit is fantastic and can use HDMI to DVI/audio cable to deliver excellent picture and sound to the RCA. Outstanding channel selection, especially for music. Purchased two more; one of which was a very welcome birthday gift.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I have been using the Roku3 ...and it's great. Easy to use, a breeze to set-up and a great interface. With the variety of entertainment it provides, there is no better choice.

Great Product

I've had the Roku 3 on my spare television upstairs for a couple of months now as a test to determine whether I would cancel my cable subscription throughout my house. I'm happy to say that I will be purchasing a second Roku 3 for my main television and pairing it with an HD antenna to get my local channels. Cable television in my house will be cancelled completely. I'm happy with all the options available including Hulu Plus, Netflix, and the HD Antenna. By paying for these services, I will be saving roughly $80/month and still have the majority of the same content available.
My reason for a 4 star as opposed to a 5 star review are due to the couple of negatives. I am an avid sports fan and sports options are not very extensive. Sure, there's a Watch ESPN app available, but you need a cable/satellite subscription to access that content. So if you're canceling your cable/satellite completely you will lose out on ESPN programming. The second negative, which admittedly is not a very big deal for me, is that most content available on Hulu is delayed by a day or more as compared to the first showing.
I highly recommended this product. I probably average about 2-3 hours of television per day during my work week and about 5-6 hours on my off days. About 90% of the content I watched on cable is available through Roku in some form.
