Poor Remote Pairing

The remote has the worst remote paring I have ever seen. It will not stay paired ... makes the Roku 3 totally useless.
Pros: NONE

This the best streaming unit I have owned to date. With over a 1000 channels to pick you can't go wrong with this device.

earbuds/games: remote eats batteries in < 5 hours

If you plan to use the headphones a lot - read on...
Purchased my Roku3 4200R in December as our second unit for the new bedroom TV. The unit arrived quickly, set up easily (as expected) and is 1/4 the size of our first Roku purchased in 2009. I was happy that I could now watch Roku with the headphones and not disturb others in the room. I installed the batteries provided and within 3 hours of watching Netflix the Roko flashed the low battery alert and the remote stopped working. Next morning, using new rechargeable batteries I was able to get 5 hours of total watching before the batteries died.
A quick call to the courteous support line to request replacement earbuds & a new remote. The service was above average. FYI: I discovered that the supplied instructions for pairing the remote are not accurate and all should use the extended instruction found in the Support section of this website.
With the new remote and earbuds, this time I used new Duracell Alkalines (1.6vdc). On the third day after about 8 hours of total usage over three consecutive days, the batteries were dead ( 0.96 vdc).
This remote consumes the batteries while sitting on the nightstand!
In contrast: I'm still using the original Duracells in my 2009 Roku remote (5 years!).
Support personnel respond that this is NOT a problem with the unit. The remote is WiFi (IR) and use of games or headphones decreases battery life.
I chose to request and obtain an RMA to return my unit for a refund. I cannot afford the cost of batteries. I will look at wireless headphones options where battery life is measure in weeks.
Summary:
- I still love my original 2009 Roku.
- The Roku 3 remote battery life is not acceptable and will lead to filling landfills with millions of dead batteries.
- The focus of the new software is on PAID subscriptions and not so much free content. Content is labeled as FREE but is really not. This is contrary to the way I live and have used Roku over the years.

Requested Enhancements:
1) add a power off button to the remote to conserve batteries (think green not greed)
2) add a search filter to show only REAL free, "non-subscription" based content.
3) label latent trail service as FREE TRIAL, not FREE

Roku 3 earphones.

I have bought four units total and haven't had a problem. This Roku 3 is nice except for the earphones. Earphones are terrible sounding. Like listening thought a tin can. One good thing, you can use better earphones and the quality gets better depending on the quality of the earphones. Because of the poor quality earphones I can't give it 5 stars.
Cons: Earphones

I love my Rokus

We now have 2 - one for each TV. We no longer watch 'mainstream' TV with all the negative commercials. We are watching quality shows - from everywhere (England, Sweden, etc) and movies. My husband has started to watch lectures from MIT and other great schools. I turn on the music and cooking channels.
Pros: Fast Setup, Terrific Support, Attractive Design, Simple Controls, Improved Audio/Video

Great streaming player

Include YouTube like Apple TV does. Include more video codecs like FLV and DivX. The remote is very good, especially the earphone jack. Have never had a dropout while streaming video. Great selection of channels. I liked mine so much, I bought one for a friend.

Purchased this so I could use my MLB.TV subscription on my TV instead of computer. It works great for that, very happy. Also discovered Amazon Prime, great for that too. Angry Birds Space with the controller is a fun diversion too.
