This is an excellent product and would recommend it for anyone looking to cut the cable cord. The private channels are great; however, you truly can't cut the cable bill until they actually setup deals with the network providers. If somehow Roku could give the users options to select certain live channels to pay for (like ESPN, TNT, NFL Network) this would do away with every cable provider in the US because people would actually pay per channel that they want and not get 300 channels of nonsense.
Pros: Improved Audio/Video, Simple Controls, Attractive Design, Fast Setup
Cons: Occasionally freezes

I bought a roku 2 XS in june 2013, I was looking for an affordable alternative to cable tv. I connected the ROKU 2 XS to my lynxsis e 1200 router in just about 10 minutes, went online to roku.com entered the code it showed on the tv and it was up and running.. I was amazed at the amount of "FREE" programming. For local channels you can get an hdtv antenna or cut your cable service back to just very basic service and save $$$$$.. the instructions were easy to understand for setup as well. the free programming is extensive . you can add or delete channels with the easy to use menu. you can add "hulu" which is paid programming cheap and get even more tv shows. many of which are on cable. there's even a channel with an aquarium to watch fish without the hassle of cleaning the tank. and "DOG TV" for your dog. I spent a lot of time researching ways to save money on tv and did my homework for over a month and this was the best way to go.. I would highly recommend this to anyone.!! I will be getting another for the other room soon.

I received my Roku 3 as a gift, even though I didn't think I "needed" one. I hear people talking about "streaming" stuff all the time, and while I understand the concept, the idea of actually doing it myself was intimidating, like I would have all this stuff to hook up to the TV and internet, etc. Anyway, I put off installing it, certain that I would need some serious quiet time with no interruptions. The first thing I liked is that I had one tiny spot left in the middle on my power strip, and the power adaptor for the Roku is a perfect fit! I hate getting one of those bulky adaptors and have to rearrange all of my cords (they're a mess). And the Roku itself is also about half the size I thought it'd be. The instructions are simple, and I really couldn't believe how easy it was to install. All you have to do is plug an HDMI cable into one of the HDMI slots on the back of your TV, and plug the other end into the Roku. Then, You just plug the Roku into a power outlet. That's all the hooking up you have to do (we have wireless internet though, and no home theatre. I think there's a couple more things to plug in if you have hardwired internet, or a home theatre receiver). Once I turned the TV on, the Roku logo was on the screen like a screensaver. I couldn't proceed to the next screen for some reason, so I unplugged it, then plugged it back in, and then the correct screen appeared to configure the wireless, which was very straightforward to complete. I also had to press the reset button on the remote to make it work. I later downloaded the Roku remote app, which was more user-friendly, especially in the sense that you can use the keyboard on your phone or ipad instead of having to scroll around selecting each letter or number with the remote it comes with. I would suggest downloading that first. I am looking forward though, to being able to use the earphone jack on the regular remote. That's a very thoughtful feature. So I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to set everything up without any confusion (aside from trying to figure out why the remote wouldn't work, and the Roku screen wouldn't advance). I searched around their channels to see what the possibilities are, and there's tons of stuff. I don't have time to watch movies much, so I'm not sure how useful having streaming Netflix, Vudu, AmazonTV, etc. will be for me. You can also purchase entire seasons of TV shows, or individual episodes (the episodes seem to run $1.99). I'm also not sure that I will purchase this kind of thing either. I'm more interested in what I can watch for free, since I already have an expensive cable bill. I tried a kid's show for my daughter, and it kept stopping to load some more. 2-year-olds don't understand having to wait for things to load, so that wasn't successful. The wireless in our area isn't very solid though, so I suspect that was more an issue of our lousy service, than the Roku or the channel I was watching. There are tons of channels though, and you can search through them by genre (food, family, news, etc.). It seems that a lot of the "good" channels are ones you have to pay a monthly subscription for. An average price seems to be $7.99. I will have to take more time to see what channels there are that might be worth spending the extra money on. One cool feature of the app is that you can show the photos on your mobile device on the TV screen, but it seems it's just photos, not videos, which would be even cooler (it's probably an issue of the audio). I do have a Spotify subscription (there's a Spotify channel on Roku), so it's nice to be able to play my playlists, and whatever else I want to hear from Spotify through the TV. With the Roku app, you can also play your iTunes music. There's Pandora, as well. So, overall I'm glad I have it. I will definitely use it to play music, and It's nice to be 'streaming' along with the rest of the 21st century, and to have the possibilities for the future, if I do want to watch a movie, or download a season of something (especially of kids shows that my daughter will watch over and over again.)
Pros: High quality picture, Easy to use, Video selection, Compact, Built in Wi-Fi, Easy to set up

The fact that unit comes with an RF remote makes conversion to universal remote somewhat confusing. I love the speed that I can access Netflix, I'm using a Harmony One remote to control Roku, Tivo,Yamaha receiver and Samsung tv and blueray player & everything seems to operate smoothly.
I use this product to receive my only TV watching capabilities. I no longer subscribe to cable and I am very happy with the programs I have to choose from with Roku's ability.
Pros: Improved Audio/Video, Simple Controls, Fast Setup, Attractive Design

I already have the Roku HD, but got the Roku 3 for the bedroom because of the headphones that plug in to the remote and the volume control located on the side of the remote. It is just super and the selection of viewing is phenomenal. I have found that if I put the remote in a drawer and don't use it for a few days, it needs to be paired with the Roku again. Not a hard thing to do, but since I have left the remote out on the nightstand, this hasn't happened, even when we lost power for over a day. Don't hesitate to get the Roku 3.
Pros: Improved Audio/Video, Simple Controls, Volume Control On Remote, Attractive Design, Fast Setup
Cons: Remote Re-pairing

Got this for my birthday to replace our blue ray player. My blue ray is 1st gen, so it was really slow loading Netflix. I have been blown away by all the channels you can add. I am currently using Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Aereo on it. I have finally found something that combines all three, instead of having to switch between technology. I also love that it has an android app to control the unit. The headphone jack lets me listen to the TV at night without waking the kids in my small house. I'm thinking of getting another one for the other room. Great product, well worth the price. The only criticism I have is that something seems loose with the headphones. I haven't pinned it down if it's at the remote connection, or if the ear buds that came with it are flaky.
