A huge block of entertainment in a very small box!

Much faster, but Roku needs to up the ante

Roku 3 for a Roku HD and Roku 2 owner is no surprise. That's both good and bad. It plays the same channels, has a new trick up its sleeve (headphones on remote) and is markedly faster than previous models.
But... It now competes with Amazon FireTV, Apple TV (soon a new model?), micro consoles and better and better smart TVs than the ones available when I got my first Roku 3.5 years ago.
It is all about content, and at this point Roku is definitely king. However, at some point others will be good enough (arguably that time for some markets has already come), which is the worst enemy of best-of-breed.
This year I also developed a private app. While I enjoyed doing that, it is not a modern development environment - the tools compared to both Java and .Net are lacking which could be understandable, but inexcusable is seeing incomplete help pages.
Acknowledging being all about content I would expect app building tools such as a website-to-app tool that would enable navigating to content websites and creating at least a data model if not a skeleton app from, using the http traffic. I would expect that tool to have an internal browser mimicking iOS, for example, to expose the HLS streams. That's just one example of something that can be done to maintain the gap Roku once had.
Overall I enjoy the unit very much, but I am concerned Roku is going to be run over by good-enough + brand - Amazon, Google, Apple, Sony are all stronger brands than Roku. They all arguably have good-enough solutions. Roku 4 can't just be a faster Roku 3.

The menu and user interface are easy to follow, fast and fluid. It can be set up for automatic updates. Best Roku yet!

I just bought Roku 3 and it is so easy to set up and get started. You don't have to be a Brain Surgeon to use it. Buy one and you will see how easy it is to use!!

I've had my roku for over a year and couldn't be happier. It was the best decision I've made in terms of technology and for watching movies and tv. Thanks to this amazing product, I have my cut my internet/cable bill in half! I don't even need cable anymore since this device meets all of my entertainment needs.
