Great Features - when they work.

I bought this about 5 months ago. Was thrilled with all of the features. HOWEVER, by the third month, I began having issues with my Roku which seemed to center around the remote/Roku pairing. If the remote doesn't pair, there is NOTHING you can do. There is no "off" switch for the Roku, there is only the "pull the plug" solution.
At first, I thought the batteries were bad - so replace them. This did not work. Then I tried the "hold the A & B buttons while pressing the pairing button" - which, I might add is located inside of the battery compartment -you must remove the sliding lid to get to it. ANYWAY, that did not work.
Noted that my Roku felt hot on the bottom - could that cause the pairing problem (a needed heat sink)?
SOLUTION: Reboot the Roku.
What a pain. You can't imagine how discouraging this is for a 75 year old with poor eye sight and a brain which could also stand rebooting!
PS: Additionally, the subtitles seem to take a holiday at odd times.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not so good.. disappointing

There are a lot of features. But, unfortunately, the unit is too slow. The remote is the worst. It drains battery really fast. I go through a pair of batteries in 3-4 days.. this is ridiculous.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I think this is a great alternative to cable services in many ways. If I had one complaint if would be that there is no way to sync your information when you have more than one box.

Love my Roku

I was so unsatisfied with my local cable offerings and the multitude of commercials played loudly at the rate of 10-12 every few minutes. My daughter in law told me about the Roku and I purchased my first device. Since then I have added two more so that each floor of my home has one. I can always find something interesting and educational to watch and I have recommended it to friends and at least one has made a purchase. The remote is so simple to operate and customer service, though rarely needed, is efficient and friendly. I use my Roku daily. If I could get CNN and MSNBC I would cancel my cable service. Maybe this is something that will be available someday.

NOT an alternative to cable!

My family and I bought the Roku because it was recommended to us by a friend. We were told that it would provide more channels and would eliminate the need for cable, which we were trying to avoid. The Roku device, itself, was user friendly, interactive, and easy to use. It did provide the several channels, most of which were not popular channels. It did provide a variety of the basic channels (ABC, FOX, etc.); however, you either can only access 3-5 episodes from that channel or you have to subscribe to the provider all together. Each basic channel we tried to get, we had to either get a subscription or provide a cable provider. With the channels we truly wanted, we might as well pay for basic cable each month than subscribe to all those channels and pay a total (if not more) in the monthly amount. The Roku concept just didn't work for us.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

For the most part I am very pleased with my Roku. What I am not happy with is some of the channels tell me my email address is not valid. But it is my valid email address. They should believe me when I say that is what it is. How do I get through to these people if they don't recognize my email? So far, my favorites are PBS and A&E. When I retire, I will be signing up for hulu plus. Till then I don't watch enough tv to pay for it.
