roku has given me the opportunity to watch content for free that I would not have found any other way. It also provided a platform for netflix to be watched on hdtv. love the roku service. I also like that new channels arrive to roku very regularly.

Comparing the Roku with the PS3

For several years I have used a PS3 as the main core of my media center. When it stopped working a few months ago I needed a replacement. I looked at the features and reviews for the Roku, Amazon TV, and Chrome Cast. I eventually settled on the Roku 3. I am glad that I did.
Sony chose to lock down the PS3. You can only do the things they decide to let you do. If they change their mind about something they can and do remove features with mandatory updates. If you don't install the update everything stops working.
Roku takes a more open approach. Anyone can write an app for the Roku. As a result there are apps available to do nearly anything you want to do and a lot of things you don't. This gives you far more options than the PS3. We discontinued cable years ago and get all of our entertainment online or over the air. Roku makes this easy. Nearly every streaming media option you can think of has an app, and generally they work well.
Among the choices available to you are:
Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Amazon Audio, Hulu, Crackle, Youtube, Spotify, TuneIn. Shoutcast, Vimeo, Plex, PBS, TED Talks, Pandora, HBOGo, and many, many others. Many of these are pay services, many are free.
Both the PS3 and the Roku have a USB port that will allow you to plug in a flash drive and play media from it. The Roku will also recognize and play from my USB hard drive. The PS3 will not.
There is a smartphone APP for the Roky that lets you use your Android or iPhone as a Roku remote, as well as a keyboard so that you do not have to enter data with the Remote. This is a nice feature. You can also send media from your phone to your Roku.
What are the cons with Roku? Not many.
I have since repaired my PS3 but I only use it for two things. Playing DVD and Blue Ray disks, and streaming media from my PC. Roku can stream from the PC using the Plex Media Server, but I don't really like Plex. I prefer the Playstation Media Server, but it doesn't work well with the Roku. The Playstation Media Server seems to handle more formats, and I prefer the way it organizes media over the way that Plex does. With Plex, if you don't name the files the way it likes, then it has trouble finding and recognizing them.
I think the PS3 has slightly better video and audio quality than the Roku, but it's not a big difference.
Occasionally the Roku has locked up and either rebooted itself or I have had to unplug it. It hasn't happened often and it reboots quickly.
I wish the TunedIn app would tell you the name of the song that is playing. The Android app does so the data is there, but the Roku app does not display it.
If you ar looking for a streaming media solution I strongly recommend the Roku 3

So simple to set up, great features and channel selections, and LOVE the remote with earphones for watching late night without disturbing anyone! You can control the volume to the headphones on your remote. Wish there was a way to control TV volume using the Roku remote, and not my TV remote.

We have been most pleased since our purchase of Roku 3. It has expanded our choice of movies to view as well as TV shows that we hadn't seen.

Works well, does what I need but some minor issues

The android app can't connect to the Roku 3 unless you have an IP Address like 192.168.X.X, no other IP works, even other Class C addresses.
Also, sometimes audio on the Roku is about 1/2 to 1 pitch on a keyboard lower than it should be, but that's quickly fixed by removing the HDMI cable and plugging it back in.
Also, the remote Headphone jack doesn't work correctly any more, and when headphones are plugged in the Roku shows the remote's batteries going dead, even if they are fresh.
Other than those issues, it's a wonderful device and has allowed me to cut my cable.

A little buggy, but worth it

We recently upgraded from our original Roku to the Roku 3 to get a better speed performance and take advantage of the headphones with the remote. The "bouncing Roku" restart doesn't happen nearly as often with the Roku 3, but we have noticed lately that it sometimes either slows down or speeds up the streaming (people either sound like James Earl Jones or a Munchkin) and manually restarting the box seems to fix the problem. We love the headphones on the remote- has made "turn that down" arguments in our house non-existent.

Worked great for 13 months

The unit is great and I loved using it. At 13 months old it began to fail intermittently on 1080p resolution. That got progressively worse and eventually it would not work at that resolution at all. It began rebooting itself when it has problems. When I back it down to a lower resolution it works longer but still intermittently fails. Roku support did a great job of following their script ("it is probably your TV, try it on other ones"), but the self rebooting continues. I would love to have one that works, but if it fails every 13 months or so, that is not good.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
