I have a Roku in my bedroom and use it at night. I like the controller with the ear buds that allows me to have only one device.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Even though we have a TIVO 3 and Smart TV (both with netflix and others) we use the Roku because it's MUCH faster when navigating menus and jumping around, it's easier and more intuitive to use, skips/pauses less often (netflix) and has a better selection of channels than the other devices.

It is the most responsive media player on the market. I originally thought that you could not play local network media with it, but it turns out that you can with some free apps. I use it with my Synology, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, and it works great.

We have had this device for awhile now and while we don't use it everyday, it is always on and ready to go when we want it. I can save my favorites on my watch list and be ready to watch a movie in minutes.

In a word: awesome. It does exactly what it's supposed to do - no more, no less. Since it's built for streaming, I don't have to deal with the glitches that a blu-ray player does. No time lost in powering up and lots of options.

not a bad system overall I do not like the fact that you have to give them a charge card number to hook it up.

My friend turned me on to Roku about a year ago. We cut the cable service last November and haven't looked back. Our only beef is that the remote stops working occasionally. You can reset it withe button in the back of the remote or just use the remote app (free) on your smartphone, so it's not a big inconvenience.

I've been using my laptop as a media device for the last 6 years. It died a month ago; so I choose the Roku 3 as a replacement. These are my Pros and Cons from this perspective.
Pros: * Better resolution - Actual 1080p vs my laptops 1366 x 768. The blacks are darker and the image noticeably clearer. * Optical sound out * No more waiting to boot up, or constant Windows updates forcing you to restart. The Roku is always on and always fast. * A decent remote, with headphone jack for private listening. No more wireless mouse that barely has a signal from my couch. * Netflix and Hulu have a much better design than the PC version.
Cons: * Everything has to be premium. For example I can't listen to Rdio without paying them. Every app requires you sign up and every app requires you pay them before they allow any content. * This isn't Roku's fault, but in the Netflix app they place your list of movies you've saved at the very bottom of the screen. I have to scroll through 20 categories before I reach the stuff I've saved to watch. * Still not Roku's fault, but I still can't watch HBO * No broswer app * Can't get it working with my universal remote
Overall the Roku 3 was a great purchase. The pros far outweigh the cons. I only wish I had retired my old laptop sooner.
