I am a satellite TV customer and I bought the ROKU, hoping to stream video and get away from the ever increasing fees and ever decreasing customer service of satellite TV. Unfortunately, living in a rural area, our DSL carrier doesn't provide enough bandwidth and the ROKU must constantly buffer, so it does not suit our needs. I assume with acceptable (we do not meet the recommended speed) bandwidth, the ROKU would be a great little tool. I would be interested in a product that provided more temporary memory and could store downloaded data in memory; for instance, choosing a program to watch 30 minutes or an hour in advance and having it completely downloaded by the time you plan to watch it, and meanwhile the next program could be downloading into memory to be watched.
Obviously this isn't a fair review of the product which clearly spells out the requirements to function acceptably, but it was worth the chance to see if it would work for us. Otherwise the features and ease of use seem to make it a great product. I just wished there was a product that worked for those of us with slow DSL connections.

I don't have cable, so my Roku has given me the opportunity to catch up on some of my favorite shows via Netflix and Hulu. I don't miss cable at all and I save $80/month!

Not knowing what to expect , I searched comments on web sites. There were glowing remarks about the Roku line of streamers. Actually very good comments on all of the models. I decided to try the latest one the Roku 3. I say try it knowing I could return it to Wal-Mart if it did not turn out good. Pleasantly surprised at the results. I opted to pay for Netflix ( $8.00 per mo.) as it seemed to have a lot of choices of movies and TV series. Wife and I enjoyed all 3 seasons of a very popular PBS series , with NO commercials ! It all so had most of the popular TV series like Waking dead , Sons of Anarchy and 30 Rock (130 episodes or more !) In all I chose 63 channels for my setup. Each having 100's of choices. There are additionally pay per views available at $2.99 and some channels that required monthly fees or One time fee. A very credible set up in all.

Purple screen issues (unauthorized content)

The Roku 3 is generally a good media player, but I'm only giving it an average rating because of ongoing technical issues with the device. The wifi connection is excellent compared to my two Sony BluRay devices. However, everytime I use my Roku 3 I get a purple screen that says something about unauthorized content. The audio plays, but I cannot see the picture. The problem is that my Roku 3 is blocking content I've paid for through Amazon instant. After some research, I've found that this issue is rather common with the Roku 3 and the quick fix is to unplug the HDMI cable and then plug it back in. The quick fix always works, but it's fairly annoying that I have to quick fix my device anytime I want to use it. My Sony Bluray players work 99% percent of the time without sort of manual manipulation of the cables, but the wifi connection is slightly slower.

I recently ditched cable to save money on bills. I had read good things about the Roku online and decided to give it a try. So far, I love it. Connecting was easy, and it seems there are a ton of apps that pertain to my interests. The interface is simple and easy to use, and it seems to be updated often. I really was hesitant to get rid of 200+ channels of cable, but now I see it was completely worth it.
