Cutting the TV cable

When we were told our Charter cable bill would increase from $169/month to $308/month on June 8th, we knew we would have to do something drastic. Our small home business required fast downloads and the cable delivered, but spending so much on TV was way to much to swallow. We researched all the options and settled on Roku, and are glad we did. Its fast, simple, and it works. We have cut our cable bill by at least $50.00. The only drawback is the absence of live TV. We have a digital antenna but it only gives us three local channels and doesn't include Fox news live and the weather channel live, our two favorite stations. Thanks for Roku. We hope to have some live TV by internet soon, but are satisfied for now.

So easy to set up took 5 min. With 1000 channels you always have something to watch. Don't buy Chromecast, get Roku 3 instead

Great Alternative to Cable/Satellite

This device is awesome. The remote control comes with a headphone port! Get a pair of good headphones and you can watch tv without bothering anyone in the house. Very convenient when it is hooked up to the tv in the bedroom.
It takes some getting used to but I watch it every day, almost like it were regular television. You have to adjust your expectations of what you can watch and when you can watch the most recent episode or movie. But, if your willing to give up certain programs and content, adjust your viewing habits slightly, it is a wonderful alternative to $100 to $200 a month for cable tv.
I am a member of Netflix ($8), Hulu Plus ($8) and Amazon Prime ($8.50), so I spend less than $25/month for countless movies and tv episodes. These 3 cost money but there are other channels, like Popcorn, that are free and have free movies and content. I spend about $50/month for Internet, so with the $25 for the memberships, my total monthly savings from my former cable bundle was around $65/month. Depending on your your cable package, provider and the competition in your area, you may be able to increase your monthly savings even more.
I watch movies every night before bed. My children watch cartoons in the morning and play Angry Birds Space whenever they can. We get our money's worth.
So, with that said, I have recommended the Roku 3 AND the Roku Streaming Stick to family, friends and coworkers.

Best Thing to Happen to This Life Long Cable User

The Roku is fabulous! For 100% financial reasons, I cut my Xfinity cable August 2013. The big heart break I expected in cutting cable: movies and football.
I got Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts and a Roku. Set up was simple, hard part was typing in passwords for subscription accounts and deciding which channels to add to My Channels.
With the Roku you can search across ALL channels - subscriptions and free - for content. It turns out I can find plenty of movies. At the time I decided this would be way cheaper even if I end up paying for the occasional movie. But so far I haven't paid for any movies, just browsing and watching. This is fabulous. Although, most of the latest movies are not free, so many good movies are and often fairly recent movies do come in rotation for free.
And then there are movies and other content on the channels that come free on Roku - Crackle, Hulu and the bajillion others! Its actually overwhelming, just like the too many channels on cable.
As far as football, after the big chop (cut cable) I'm left with only the ability to view my home team - the Detroit Lions on network TV, with the fabulous antenna I got from Costco for $49.00, but that's another story. Honestly, I'm not THAT big a fan - to pay 140 more dollars every month to watch talking sports heads talk smack about my Lions.
Another thing I notice is I see WAY fewer commercials anymore. Now it seems stupid that cable can cost so much and still have so many commercials.
Another great thing is I can take my Roku with me on trips and to friends homes. That DVR movie viewing people do where they have to fast forward past the commercials and sometimes go too far or not far enough - none of that with Roku. I am so glad I did this. Even if I wanted to pay for cable, I will ALWAYS have a Roku.

Second Roku

This is my second (additional) Roku, and I have experienced some issues I never had with the original unit. First of all, it just freezes sometimes, and will only clear with a reset, which then loses all of the settings and customization. Second, I cannot set the audio mode to "surround, or I lose all sound on some movies that use Dolby Digital Plus. My sound system input is the optical link from my Samsung TV, and that may be part of the issue, but I feel the Roku should have a mode that still allows me to have surround 5.1 on programs that have it. Third, the newly designed Netflix menu sucks...But that might be a Netflix issue.

I bought this device yesterday from Target. I was interested in the large selection of channels, and my hope was that SnagFilms worked better on this device than it does on my Sony Blu-Ray player. SnagFilms was miserable on the Sony platform, and so far it seems to be much better and even "normal" on the Roku device. The fast-forward function actually seems to work as expected. I've heard that Sony funnels all content through their servers, but I don't know if that is correct.
The UI is pleasant enough, and the remote seems simplistic and fairly efficient. I will say that the configuration experience could have been better. Something about the virtual keyboard using the remote isn't as fluid as other devices, but I can't put my finger on it. The main thing that bothered me was setting the WiFi password. There was no WPS (push button setup) available, which forced me to enter my quite long and complex WiFi password using the clumsy remote method. I must have made a mistake, because it didn't connect, and I was forced to retry. However, the password as well as access point information was not retained and available to edit. I found this ridiculous and not consistent with other interfaces I've used over the years. Once I got my password right, the setup functioned as expected.
Overall, the UI is fast, but I've run into a few channels that bounce you back to the home menu for no apparent reason when you try to access them. I'm not sure if that means they are offline. I know that SnagFilms did this when I was logged in using my account, which was alarming given 40% of my reasoning for the purchase was to use that channel. Once I logged out of SnagFilms, I was allowed to use them as a guest with no problem. Don't ask me why I thought this would fix the problem, but it did.
My only other complaint is the missing power button. I'm old, and I still expect every device to have a way to power down.
Regardless, I'm thinking this device will provide lots of entertainment choices and might cause me to drop cable service eventually.

Have used it for 6 months now. Had one problem easily fixed via online chat with the ROKU tech support. Very well done. Had to wait approximately 20 minutes, but the support was spot on
