roku 3 works smoothly and reliability.

I first bought a Samsung DVD player with wifi and apps. Could not reliability hook up to Netflix or Amazon Prime. Thought it was my wifi connection. The Roku box worked perfectly when I replaced the DVD player with it.

I have had the Roku 1, Roku 2, and Roku 3 and by far the Roku 3 is the sleekest and fastest out of all of them. It has a lot of options for channels and I like that one can listen to it via the headphones without bothering other people. It even has an internal streaming player so you can connect to your computer's web server, although I haven't quite figured out how to get it to work.
The only complaint, and the same one I've always had is that SRT files that I name as the same as the video files don't play unless all the planets are aligned. I thought it was because of the encoding of both the srt and the video but it doesn't seem to make a difference. But that is a minor issue. It's a nice box to have.

I debated on whether to try Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV, or upgrade my Roku. Given I have been so happy with past Rokus, and they were first to market in offering alternatives to cable and satellite television, I decided to stick with the tried and true and purchased Roku 3. As expected, I am very pleased - there are marked improvement over previous versions and excellent new features. It still occasionally stalls, however, which can be frustrating in the middle of watching a program. All in all though, I am very happy with my purchase.

Doesn't live up to advertisement

I bought this device so that I could play videos from local storage as well as stream from the Internet. The specs on my device clearly list:
********* microSD card slot for additional game and channel storage (Max Size: 16GB) (card not included) USB 2.0 port for playback of MP4 (H.264), MKV (H.264), AAC, MP3, JPG and PNG files. *********
There is no USB Port though and no way to playback MP4 files. There are hundreds of Apps ... 99% of them are useless. Any useful App needs a monthly subscription. There is no way to get any meaningful content on this device other paying an extra monthly fee through Apps such as Netflix or Hulu.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I purchased about 4 months ago and really have enjoyed. Pros: Watch any movie or show on HBO, Showtime and Cinemax when you want. Cons: You need to have the above paid subscriptions.

Good box, terrible remote.

From the first remotes to the last audio-video remotes ever made (I'm almost 65 years old) that I've every used, this remote is the worst one ever. Shiny, plasticy, and very slippery buttons and surface on this remote. "Enter key" is in wrong place on the remote. It should be in between the selector arrows buttons so that that you don't have to go hunting for it in a darkened tv room and end up hitting the return, pause, or back/forward buttons instead. Terrible!!! I however do like the built-in headphone jack. This remote is why I rarely use my Roku 3 box. The Roku 3 box gets hung-up or in a stuck situation about once a month and requires an unplug, wait ten seconds, and a re-plugging and a total restart cycle. I may half-heartedly switch brands next upgrade because of this toy like remote. Over the years , I liked the my first two Roku boxes better but this one is much faster. Hope the next one has a friendlier and man size remote and maybe be slightly backlighted with an orange or whte colored enter key to spot easily in a darkened tv room and I hope they get rid of the slippery surface so I feel like I don't have a slippery fish in my hand. I know you can get it right next time Roku! Just do it.

Really enjoying my Roku 3

I was waffling between Roku, Chromecast, Fire, and all the rest of the streaming gadgets. As I read the reviews, I kept coming back to Roku. When I went to the store, I still hadn't quite made up my mind, though I was very close. Then, what really tipped it is when the salesperson checked and we learned that Roku streams the Acorn Online channel, which is packed with great British, Canadian and Australian TV shows (primarily British, but some of the others sneak in). This was something I especially wanted, and it sealed the Roku deal for me. I've thoroughly enjoyed having my Roku. It is compact and appears well made. It works with HDMI, which I really like, since I have an extra HDMI port on my TV. It streams great, doesn't seem to need a lot of wi-fi "juice" and never buffers (maybe I'm just lucky with my wi-fi, I don't know, but it works well). The only thing that has ever annoyed me is when I, myself, forget to turn off the screensaver feature. Sometimes I leave things on pause too long, and then just when I'm about to watch again, the screensaver kicks in. This is my own fault, though! It's only doing what I set it up to do. When I change that setting to never go to screensaver, my shows are not interrupted. I am very glad I chose my Roku.

Bought my Roku 3 about 3 months ago and love it. Makes binge watching my favorites shows a breeze. Don't miss cable one bit.
