Not that great

I do basically like the Roku. I wanted to be able to get Youtube and Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. I can get these, and more. I chose the Roku over another Apple TV so that I would have Amazon Instant Video as a channel. But, I do wish there were some improvements. For example, on the YouTube channel, in the list of videos to choose, I wish you could see the date, number of views, and %of likes BEFORE going into a particular video. Right now, to see these things, you have to select the video and start playing it. On Apple TV (which I also have) - you can see all of this in the list. The Apple TV has a MUCH better UI for YouTube. In fact, I was going to return the Roku and exchange it for another Apple TV (for this reason alone) - but I was past my return window, so I am stuck with the Roku. Since I own an iPad (and an AppleTV already) I can stream Amazon Instant Video to the Apple TV. I wanted a Roku to skip that intermediate step, but the bad YouTube interface is not worth owning a Roku to me. Also, I wish there was a way to override Amazon Instant Video Parental Controls with a PIN. Right now - I have to go on the computer to get around this - this should be able to be done on the Roku. I realize my needs for the Roku are limited, so the Roku will probably be great for other people. It just isn't that great for me.

Christmas present I gave myself. Removed it from the box and had it working in a few minutes (5 tops) by following the simple directions. Have not seen any issues with the quality of video streams.
The only complaint, a VERY small one, is that I find the remote control operations slow, but that may be just me.

I bought this mainly to stream Netflix but it offers so much more. I wear hearing aids so closed caption is a must for me. Most free movie services such as cackle do not offer closed caption but for a hearing person, there are so many free movies out there it would be silly not to own a Roku

I was trying to decide between this and the apple TV, went with this based on all the channels it had. I am not disappointed. The apps and channels are amazing, the video quality is superb and it is just a great device. I'm buying everybody I know one for Christmas next year.

Cumbersome to use

Keep in mind that you must provide a valid credit card in order to set up your Roku. Many channels require that you set up a free account requiring you to use a three-button remote to enter your e-mail address and password. This can be very cumbersome and time consuming. For the most part, if the show you want is available on Roku, it is probably public domain and you could simply watch it on your home computer (or on your TV via an HDMI cable from your home computer). It is impossible to watch a 'free' movie on the Crackle channel as the movie streaming stops once the first commercial is displayed. The remote interface is clumsy for sure. It is much easier to search for shows via a standard keyboard then it is to use the Roku remote. At a cost of $100, it's not a bad option, but there are easier ways to bring these shows to your television.
