From price to performance, this is the one to own. I started with a Roku 2XD, (which I still luse) and asked Santa for a Roku 3. WOW this is one super unit. If you are in need of a streaming internet content plus more built-in features than I care to list, Roku is for you. From it's compact design to it's fast simple set up Roku Rules!!

I originally bought a Roku 3 for the Netflix application as the Netflix application in my Samsung Blu-Ray player was slow and buggy (constant freezes, disconnects, having to turn player off and on) and was so frustrating to get to work that many times I would just abandon the thought of watching something on Netflix. The Roku 3 takes up no room at all compared to my Blu-Ray player and works fast and flawlessly. Its always on, consumes little electricity, and I never have any trouble connecting to Netflix or playing a video. It did everything I had hoped. As a Amazon Prime member I also get many movies and shows from there using the app. Later I discovered hundreds of other channels that can be downloaded, many of them free and some pay, and even some adult channels. All of them can be quickly downloaded and utilized. Best feature I've discovered so far is Plex. I have to say for this app alone is worth the price. It allows streaming from the PC to the Roku of any file type I've thrown at it, including movie subtitles which was another problem I had with my Samsung Blu-Ray player. Plex Media server is free and it beautifully organizes all the media so it can be easily searchable on the Roku. I was so happy with the Roku 3 I bought a second one for the other TV in our household.

We live on a boat and our internet connection is not always great The streaming on the Roku 3 has exceeded our expectations with no pixilating. One month and so far, so good.

Pros: 1. Very simple to use remote control and graphical user interface.
2. Wide selection of content. 3. Headset remote control is helpful.
Cons: 1. While Fox (TV network) (free) and Time Warner Cable (cable provider) (fee) are available, other providers in those categories are not. Other TV networks (free) and Verizon Fios (fee) (my cable provider) are available on my PC, but not Roku and no indications when they may be available. 2. While there is some free TV and movies content, I found little free Over The Air (OTA) content. What is free is not mainstream (at least my mainstream). 3. Though the Roku 2 interface is much simpler and more powerful than my clunky, cumbersome, and complicated Verion FIOS set top box, even Roku 2's interface is still severely daunted by the staggering content available. 4. Too many of the "free" channels offered turn out to deceptively only be an initial window into only fee content. 5. Trying to replace a Verizon Fios triple play (phone, TV, internet) package with Roku is like buying a car, part by part. For example, one tv show episode typically costs $1.99. Redbox movies only cost $1.25+ each. That's extremely cheap compared to fee movies through Roku. 6. The remote doesn't control the TV volume or power. The remote's volume control only handles the headset. The sound through the headset is not crisp and clear compared to what I usually get through my headset, e.g., on my PC. There are no programmable buttons to go direct to a channel. The only direct buttons are to fee channels. 7. The Roku 2 box is very warm. That may explain why there is only a 90 day warranty on the unit. 8. Though the Roku 2 is advertised to connect to virtually any TV, it doesn't connect to my TV that only has an RF input. 9. The quality of the picture through the Roku 2 is noticeably less than that from my roof-top antenna and even the Verizon FIOS content, which is noticeably less than that of the antenna. 10. The totally free content and HD image quality from my long-range, multi-directional, roof-top antenna is a substantially better value than both cable and roku. 11. At $35, the ChromeCast is substantially cheaper than roku, though ChromeCast only has an HDMI connection and has no remote control included or an ac/dc adaptor. Not all TVs have HDMI and fewer have both an HDMI port and a USB port to power the ChromeCast. ChromeCast also offers some Chrome browser content, though I have yet to actually see what it entails. 12. Smart TVs may eventually fill the needs provided by roku. 13. Etc.
