Excellent printer

This printer was an upgrade from my 7 year old Epson CX3200 which I still use. I've had the Stylus Photo 1400 about 5 months and use it for printing color photographs on Epson premium matte, premium glossy, and luster papers. The images are sharp, and the color and print quality are excellent. The glossy finish is smooth and consistent across the photograph and looks perfect. There were no unglossy spots of a metallic-looking sheen as I've seen on glossy prints from other brands of printers. As explained in the instruction manual, the prints need to dry for several minutes to allow the colors to fully develop. As with any printer, a color management system needs to be used to calibrate the printer with the computer screen. I only use Epson paper and Epson inks. I'm very pleased with this printer.

Photo 1400

I have owned Epson printers for over 20 years, and this is a quality machine which makes printing my photography easier! I was able to make a 13 X 19 print of an eagle in flight that had the same clarity and vibrance as a 4 x 6. And in very little time and without calibrating the printer to my monitor. Printing directly from either my wifes camera or my D-SLR is an added bonus. Took very little time to learn. The only thing I would wish for would be higher capacity ink cartridges.

some color adjustment

I owned the 1280 and used it for years, printing thousands of large color glossy images. Loved it. It finally quit and I got the 1400 as recommended by Epson sales. Compared to the 1280, it seems to do a lot better on ink. It is also much faster and quieter than the older model, and takes the print data faster too. The colors are good for presentation work and photos are adequate for me, but I am not a professional photographer. It take some experimentation to get the colors rich though, especially for the cyan and getting a rich dark blue. Yellow seemed a little pale as well. Over-all, things print light for me, running a Mac and Photoshop. I always use the settings to change ink % and brightness, etc. I also needed to tweak the levels and curves in photoshop to make everything darker before printing. I need to do a couple of test pages to try to isolate the issue. Other than that, it is a good deal for the money. It went to work right out of the box, cranking out art for a stack of presentation boards. I am an illustrator / designer and it works for me.

I have this printer for two years,my hard drive crashed, so I had to register again. Quality of the print is excellent, but what is very annoing about this printer is that it stops by itself, and you have to adjust the paper and start the printer again. You have to do that many times if you print many pages.Problem is that you cannot leave it alone and come back, you have to babysit the printer.

Epson 1400 paper feed issues
on April 18, 2011

Printing menues on our 1400 is a task everyone fights not to do. the paper feed is so horrible on large formats that if you do not constantly baby sit it, we have had it take days to finish a task because it stopped on every or every other sheet. Have contacted support and retailer to no ends. Received advice on "fluffing" paper and leveling the unit. Nothing more.

Good printer but ink is expensive

I bought this printer to replace a 1280 that I had been using for many years. This seems to be a very good printer and the inks more vibrant than the 1280 inks.
The main and perhaps only negative is that the ink seems to run out very quickly and at the exhorbitant prices that Epson charges this will be very costly. As a result I am investigating refilling my own cartridges and/or using a CIS.
