Great Home Theater Speakers
on January 10, 2012

I added these with a center speaker (also from Sony) to complete my surround system. I was amazed at their bass and mid-range reproduction, very powerful. I don't have a sub-woofer and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. Without a center though, vocals and highs are quite muddy, so I would not recommend these for a music/stereo system (I have a dedicated audiophile set-up, these cannot even compare.) As part of a surround system though, I can't imagine there being much better for the price.
What's great about it: Strong Bass, very loud
What's not so great: Very big, muddy highs
I would recommend this to a friend!

For lower end speakers, you are unlikely to find a better deal than these Sony speakers. The sound is quite surprising for the price you pay and they easily match up to speakers that cost double what you normally pay for these. For the non-audiophile on a budget, I highly recommend these speakers over the competition for the sheer price to performance ratio.
Sonically, these speakers are very even across the spectrum, however I feel that the tweeter on these speakers is exceptional. highs are very crisp and clear. The 8" woofers are also quite good, being able to produce fairly low frequencies (below its rated 50hz) and hits the low notes with authority producing smooth even bass. In my opinion, the weak link in this speaker is the 3 1/4" mid-driver. I feel it's not quite large enough to reproduce the lower-mid frequencies properly. I'm thinking they should have went with a 4" driver instead. Vocals are slightly muddy as there seems to be a bit of a gap between how low the mid-driver can perform and where the 8" woofer is capable of taking up the slack. Owners who are using these speakers in a 3.1 or more configuration probably won't notice because the problems are usually found in the vocal range, which would pretty much go away with the use of a center speaker.
Overall, these are very nice sounding cheap speakers. True enthusiasts will look elsewhere of course, but for the lay home theater fan, these will do nicely to fill out your HT setup at home.
Two thumbs up (just please, in your next speaker line, put in true crossovers and a more robust mid-driver, please Sony. Then these guys will be perfect!)
What's great about it: very inexpensive. awesome performance to price ratio.
What's not so great: No proper crossover. Mid-range driver a little small.

Good overall

These speakers are an overall good to above average speaker. I am running them through a Pioneer SX-680, which produces some very good sound. They sound better mounted on a pedestal or table, rather than on the floor. You just aren't going to get better sound buying a cheap iHome system for the same price.
What's great about it: Strong Mids/Lows
What's not so great: bigger than expected

Double Up and blow the house down!

I have a 7.1 Sony receiver, and for the side, and surround speaker channels. I made a combination of two Sony # SS- B 1000, and two Sony# SS- B 3000. HOW? One SS - 1000 in series, with a SS - 3000. Then the same, with the other two. Then connect both series in parallel to the output channel. This brings an 8 ohm impedance total. Plus I am still old school, the more the speakers, the more sizes, the better quality. Most of "today's" speakers do not include mid-range speakers. No matter what you listen to. There are mid-range frequencies included. First always go to Sony, for your choice. Research the electronic math required. Then have fun!!! I hear a pin drop, to the biggest blasts. It also helps to have a couple of Sony subs hidden about.
What's great about it: The name "SONY" says it all. Everything top quality.
What's not so great: NONE!!!

Recording Artist: PERFECT STUDIO SPEAKERS!
on September 9, 2014

Awesome! Not too many products get that rating from me, I can tell you that. I am an audiophile, and I have a recording studio, so the system I play back through has to be impeccable... and save me room. ROOM comes at a premium in a recording studio. I'd looked at and compared specs and reviews for TOO MANY "Bookshelf" speakers and it left me in the "great divide" between performance and size. I do home theater and have a serious setup so when I saw these from Sony almost every review was for home theater applications. I wanted them for "stand alone" stereo and WIDE RANGE. They did NOT disappoint! I am now listening to an absolutely perfect reproduction of a song I just wrote and digitally recorded and in EVERY SINGE RANGE (LOW, MID RANGE, AND HIGHS) they are all crisp, clear, and the more I crank the volume knob, the more it GIVES! Needing to BELIEVE in my purchase, I put in CD's of progressive rock bands, who challenge the full range of stereo systems every time. Yes, Genesis, Rush, Kansas, more, all absolutely crystal clear and just like I was at a concert (with my eyes closed). I don't care who you are or what you're using them for, they KICK MUCHO GLUTEUS MAXIMUS - you can spend a lot more... but you can't go wrong with these speakers from Sony. Kudos and KowTows to you, Sony, for "my Answer" to my studio speaker problem!

Awesome sound

They can easily fill a room with rich sound; I bought these to replace some 20 year old SB-1000's. The bass is noticeably more pronounced-adding richness to the sound field. I use these as my rear speakers in a 4.0 surround system. Their construction seems top notch, each perfectly clean and ready for action. Love them.

Great Sound

I live in a small apartment and use these guys for the front channel of my home theater. I do not have a bass driver but with these I don't need one. The bass is very true as well as all ranges. I could not be more pleased with speakers 5 times the price. These do my HT justice.
What's great about it: High Quality
What's not so great: None

College

I bought these looking for speakers for my college dorm room because its going to be the party room. im expecting to have between 15-25 people in there and i wanted a dependable speaker because my roomates have no common sense when it comes to blowing speakers... so i figured sony was a solid name. I got the speakers 3 weeks ago and have had them in a basement with a low ceiling but its still 35 feet long.. i have the speakers pushing out thru an oldschool fischer that pushes 100W per channel. i havent put the speakers anywhere near full blast because they get rediculously loud. ive had them up around 80 watts and certain parts of my house shake. the sound quality is very very good for a 100 set of 2.. even saying that price aside these speakers sound very good. in no way are they shelf speakers though.. they are about the height of a tv stand if you can picture that.. i honestly couldnt be more happy with these they honestly compete with the bose radio i have in my car. if you hook the hunddred dollar woofer up it honestly would sound like a symphony. overall these are very well made speakers that will definately fill a room and are plenty loud for dance parties and can quiet down and be hidden and sound great in a family house too
What's great about it: Loud, dont ever break up, sony name
What's not so great: little bigger than i was lookin for in a college dorm
