Great Product

Installed easily on Windows 7 HP laptop. Am using at recommended low(my opinion) resolution of 300 dpi to catalogue slides. Gives fair view on TV and I can rescan the slides once catalogued if I want a sharper image. Have done 3,000 slides with only one need to reboot which I think is good for Windows which is always doing something in the background.
I would recommend this to a friend!

HP drops the ball on this scanner

This scanner is not compatable with Windows Vista. It's not as if HP didn't know that Vista was coming. At the very least they should note that the Scanjet G4050 is not compatable with Vista at this time. When you call their support they apoligise and telll you that they will have download available soon. I have had this product for over a month now and am still unable to use it to scan slides.

Unable to use with Windows 7

I have been exasperated trying to get software for my G4050 that will work with Windows 7. Everything that I download gets to a place where it is not compatible for Windows 7 even though HP says it is---it does not work!
HP has had plenty of time to put out new drivers and software to get this recently built scanner up and running with Windows 7 and they have failed to do it.
I will not buy another HP nor would I recommend you to buy The Scanjet G4050 until HP comes out with software to make it work if you are moving up to or already have Windows 7!!!

Scanning is slow but good quality. Two week old scanner is no longer supported by HP. Acceressarys and parts not available. Customer service is a joke and not a good one.

Not for Mac Users

I purchased this directly by phone from HP because I wanted to be sure to get a general scanner that would be able to scan medium format (120mm) slides and films. This one does. However, this scanner does not work properly with, and that there were no instructions for, a Mac. HP doesn't even have instructions online for use with a Mac. The scanner worked fine for scanning prints, but there was a loop bug in the for-Mac software that would not allow me to scan slides or film. When I tried to live-chat with HP, their website told me they did not support this scanner (that I had just bought directly from them) and would not let me live-chat with their technicians. So I returned the scanner and bought a similar other-brand scanner, which works well with my Mac.
It is too bad, because the G4050 appears to be very well made and has a number of useful features, including well-designed film and slide holders. With some good Mac software, instructions, and chat support I think this would have been a great scanner for me.

Bought to scan 35mm slides
on July 19, 2012

I mainly bought this because I have several thousand 35mm slides I want to scan. Among low-priced scanners this sounded the most promising because it can scan 16 slides at one time.
As a conventional flat-bed scanner, it works very well. It's very fast (at least it's a lot faster than my old scanner). It will scan straight to a jpg or a PDF, and it scanned direclty into PaintShopPro quite nicely. (It's only supposed to scan directly to a printer so you can use it as a copier. I haven't tried that.) If you have several smaller items to scan, you can put them all on the bed at once and it will automatically figure out the boundaries of each and scan them to separate files or images. If you have, say, three photos to scan, being able to do it in one pass instead of three is not that big a deal, but if you had dozens I could see this saving a lot of time. (If the auto-boundary doesn't get it right, you can manually adjust.)
There's some bundled OCR software but I haven't tried that yet.
As to scanning slides: They provide a kind of frame that you put on the glass, and then put the slides in this frame. Do a low-res, fast pre-scan and review the images. You can rotate or reverse slides programmatically if you didn't get them in the frame right -- I quickly found that this is faster and easier than physically rotating the slides. You can also make adjustments here, like lightening or darkening, adjusting color balance, etc. Then you click the "final" button and it scans at the full resolution and saves each slide to a file. In practice I found that by the time you go through all the steps and then put all the slides back in the tray and get the next group of 16, etc, that to get through a 140-slide tray takes me over 2 hours. If you don't worry about manually reviewing images but just take everything as is I think it would take about 90 minutes for a 140 tray.
Curiously, when you put 16 slides on the glass, it takes 10 minutes to do the scan. But if you put a piece of paper or a photo on the glass, it can scan the same 8.5 x 11 area in maybe 2 seconds.
And one nitnoid but annoying problem: I found it fairly difficult to get the slides out of the tray. Maybe somebody who hasn't bitten his fingernails to the nubs could get them out easily, but I had to use some little piece of plastic, like a pen cap, as a tool to pop them up. :-)
I would recommend this to a friend!

great scanner for negatives

I've scanned 72 31/4x51/4 B&W negatives from early 1900. All turned out beautiful. I hand made a holder for these negatives because this size was not included with the package. It was not hard to make but be sure to leave the 1/2 slit at the top for calibration.

Failure
on February 11, 2014

Scans documents, photos and slides. will not scan negatives. Backlight will come on for slides and will not come on for negatives. This appears to be a software failure not an equipment failure. As this is a replacement for the first scanner which was delivered two weeks ago and had exactly the same failure I am in despair. Contacting HP over the failure of the first failure was a nightmare of being switched from one operator to another and finally back to sales who decided the best answer was to replace.
In addition, the instruction manual frequently refers to software which a one liner on the set up documentation says is no longer included. This is not acceptable.
Here's hoping that this review brings a sensible reply from someone.
