Had to chime in. It overheats!

I couldn't not say something. I am glad it isn't just me. This flash was a waste of money. Besides the overheating problem which is ridiculous all the proprietary attachments that don't couple well to remotes make this a bad investment. I love my Sony 99, love my Zeiss lens , but get a different flash system.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi gregpphotog,
We're sorry to her that the flash didn't meet your expectations. We recommend updating the firmware of the flash to address the overheating issue.

Remote Use
on September 7, 2014

The HVLF60 its a great product. Really it is. As the old HVL43, but with the new hotshoe comes the problems for me: how can I use some remote in my HVL60 flash? Try some but doesn't work. The new connectors doesn't allow to transmit the shoot form the a99 to the flash through remote accessories.
Can I use the wireless function between the camera and flash without accessories?

Great flash with a bright LED light
on November 16, 2012

The LED light built in is very intense and can be adjusted to as bright or dark as you need. Great for those who don't want to add more equipment to their camera and you can easily go from video to photos in the press of a button.
The TTL function works perfect. Takes all the guess work out of trying to adjust the lighting. The best part is taking the flash off the camera and placing it on a tripod or table and shoot wireless without having to use a pocket wizard. This flash is a huge step up from the generic flash I bought several years ago and even more of a leap from the stock flash.
There are so many features that I haven't even scratched the surface yet. I just set it to wireless and TTL. Place the flash where I want there to be light and then start shooting. It's so simple and fun to use.
The only con I have is that the cheap plastic breaks easily. Right out of the box, my hot shoe locking lever was broke and I could hear little pieces of the plastic from the lever bouncing around in the flash. I haven't exchanged it for a new one, but the flash is heavy and tries to slide itself free once in a while, so this may be a big problem if that heavy flash comes falling off.
What's great about it: Incredibly powerful and easy to use
What's not so great: Cheap plastic parts break easy
I would recommend this to a friend!

Prolonged Pain Amidst The Beauty

‘WITHOUT THE HEAVY MAGMOD ATTACHMENTS this flash will FALL OFF YOUR SONY ALPHA 7,9 CAMERA! One day. And surprise you!’ Have been using two of these for years. I LOVED THEM WITH ALL MY HEART in the beginning. Was super impressed by the speed and quality when syncing at events and for real estate.
Prom, portraits - used them both endlessly. Then one day one fell of the hot shoe mount. And then the other...is it the mount, me or the flash locking mech!? And the bitterness in my heart turned the sweetness into a distant memory. It took a few more bounces off the floor to make me spend on ‘off camera’ items - like the remote driver (which doesn’t fall off my Sony Alphas!) and a couple of MagMod grips to attach them to tripods. Yeah! What a pain when all you want is an on camera flash for bouncing light. And run and gun. But it saves them from their next tumble to the floor! as I said Bitter Sweet! But I can safely say I feel emotionally unstable when shooting a portrait and the LOCKING MECHANISM OBVIOUSLY DOESNT STAY LOCKED! Should rename this the Sony High Impact Flash

if you're stuck in sony/minolta hot shoe land, don't expect this to work with your radio triggers...why sony continues to antagonize their customers is beyond me...i had to send it back
What's great about it: works okay
What's not so great: not worth the trouble

I have used this flash for awhile but recently it has been overheating with minimal use on my Sony A7RIV camera. At this price point I am disappointed.

lock mount is poor quality for price point

The locking mechanism releases un-expectedly causing the speedlight to fall off the camera. Weak construction for the price point. Love Sony but the speedlights need some work.
I bought this flash brand new and when I was showing someone that the flash articulate the the left and the right it broke at the hot shoe. I’ve also been told by Sony experts that this flash has issues with the heart you in general if your not very delicate with it.
