Horrible Mold problems

We had this machine for 5 years. It worked fine but developed mold issues right off the bat. We left the door open, cleaned it monthly, drained the tubes, and all the other recommended tricks to prevent mold to no avail. We tried everything to get rid of the smell - bleach, afresh, vinegar, borax - all with limited effectiveness. The smell would clear for a day or two and then be right back. If anything was left in the washers for more than an hour it would develop a mildew smell. I had to boil and/or soak overnight in vinegar clothes to get rid of the mildew smell that pervaded some clothes. We recently replaced the front loader with a top loader. Very frustrating since the machine is not that old and otherwise runs fine. I really can not recommend a front-loading washing machine.

Cleans beautifully!

I was nervous about buying a front loading washer, particularly when I heard the average wash cycle takes an hour. However, I am very pleased with this washer. It does take longer than top loaders, but it cleans beautifully with just half as much detergent and a small amount of water. We have had our washer for over two years, and I am very pleased with it!
My only negative comment is that the door hinge is very stiff and I cannot leave it open just a crack in order to dry out. The door always swings wide open if it's not completely shut, which causes inconvenience in our small laundry room because it gets in the way of the door, etc.
Pros: Performance, easy to use, Quality

This product has mold issues.

This product has mold issues and should have never been sold. An owner has to disassemble the washer to clean it about once a year. It is a very poor design and LG did not test it well enough before it was sold.
Pros: mold

Breaks often

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have replaced the drain pump once, the cold water valve once, and now it has a drain pump problem again. The repair is only warrantied for 90 days, so there is no guarantee these problems will discontinue upon repair. I am very disappointed.

Not Built to Last
on October 22, 2013

Purchased product in May/June 2008. Generally ran well/ as anticipated until October 2013 (about 5 yrs 5 months), then the washer experienced a catastrophic failure of the drum/ drive connection. Technician indicated that the unit would cost more to repair than to buy new. Wash machines are supposed to last 15-25 years. This LG was my 2nd washer. My first wash machine lasted 15 years (it was a fairly cheap brand). I know family members that had wash machines for 20-30 years. Inadequate materials, design and/or build quality of products like this make an otherwise good product a terrible value and a great disappointment. I also do not like the bad smell the front loaded units create despite always using the HE detergent and following the maintenance instructions (this seems to be a problem with many front load units), and the front load without the pedestal is not an ergonomic design (bad on back). The little it saves in energy (<$30/yr) and water (<$0.10/load), is not worth the significantly higher cost. It may be a nice thing to do for the environment, but it is a horrible investment for a product lasting less than it's intended life. If it lasted 15-20 years, it may be a worthwhile investment/extra cost. I will not buy an LG washer or dryer and will be dissuaded from buying other LG products due to this experience.
Pros: easy to use, Features/Settings

cleans very well. bad on repair.

I believe the washer is 5-7 years old...it came with the house. It washes clothes very well. The mold issues described in the other review are problems with all front load washers so i dont really have a gripe about that. I am getting ready to replace this one due to a wobbling problem that is causing the drum to rub against the rubber gasket. My biggest gripe is that at least here in idaho, repairmen dont want to work on this brand and the repairman that i did find willing to look at it said that parts are very slow to arrive from this brand. The bleach compartment is also not working. Since it will be ~600 for repair, i will be replacing it but will go with a different brand due to the repair challenges this brand has. Loved how it cleaned though.

Some of the button features could use a little better quality but overall I am very satisfied with the washer.
