An excellent beginner's dSLR

The Rebel XTi is an excellent camera for those who are just starting with dSLRs. While those new to dSLRs might rather use their SD cards from their compact cameras, I think it's a good idea to have an entry-level camera that uses CF cards, so you wouldn't have to buy a CF card later, if you're considering to trade up to something like the 50D.
The menus are well organized, and the buttons to press are well placed. I have found picture styles to be very useful. As stated, this is a great camera for those new to dSLRs.
The only con I have is how the camera goes up to around 3 fps. I may eventually trade up to the 40D, one reason for the higher fps, but other reasons as well. Otherwise, this is an excellent camera.
Pros: Simple controls/menu, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: camera goes up to about 3 fps

Wow Canon did it again

I have this camera since it came out in 2007 and I finally wanted to say how great it is after several thousand pictures later. I used to have the Canon Digital Rebel 300D and upgraded to this one, Canon Digital Rebel XTi 400D. The main reasons for me to switch were more pixels and faster start up time. Canon has satisfied me on both counts. The start up speed is so fast I feel it is instantaneous. I enjoy taking nature pictures from our back yard forest; the many animals going by give you very few seconds to react, and this camera has helped me capture gorgeous pictures. The pictures are outstanding and the colors are very crisp especially when I use a circular polarizing lens. I also use the following lenses EFs 17-85mm IS for closer shots and the EF 70-300mm USM as a telephoto zoom.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: Dim LCD, Missing features/settings, Heavy/Bulky

Great deal- wonderful purchase

I bought this camera a few years ago with the 18-55mm kit, and it has served me VERY well. I now have multiple lenses and filters, and feel like this camera has helped me evolve as a photographer. This was my first DSLR and it was really easy to learn all the elements because the interface was so user-friendly. Now even as a somewhat experienced photographer, the XTi gives me great flexibility in the different projects I do. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who's just starting out, and those who are looking to move up from a point and shoot to a DSLR. I honestly didn't experience any cons from this camera. Some have mentioned it's light-weight, but that's been a pro for me. It's durable and has survived a fair share of bumps and knocks, such as falling down a flight of stairs, and swinging into rocks at various parks. Overall, this camera continues to serve me well and proves itself to last in the hands of a clumsy teenager.

great camera for the money

This camera is, for the most part, easy and fun to use. The light weight is a real plus. Pictures are sharp and easy to download. We really enjoyed the remote shooting function this morning, taking the Santa Claus pictures at a charity breakfast.
The only real disappointment is that it's not fully compatible with the big Speedlite I purchased for use with my EOS 35 mm -- I can only use it in manual mode. The little pop flash is really inadequate for most shooting.
Pros: excellent image quality, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: Complicated controls/menu

Love it!

Love it still after 2 years. The best camera I have ever bought! I didn't care much for the kit lens and have bought several others but it was a great starter lens. The quality of my pictures are fantastic. No need for a professional anymore :)! I have and will recommend this camera to everyone. I am going to upgrade to the XSi this summer but will use this camera still as a backup. I just love the idea of the live view and stabilizer on the XSi.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: noisy

I love this camera. I've had it for three years now and I've worked it hard, and it's still going. I thought I'd have to get another camera after two years cause it would get old. But nope! This camera is still going. It still takes great pictures, and it's the best camera I've had.
I highly recommend it.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

Good Beginner DSLR
on December 26, 2008

This is my first DSLR. I was late coming to the world of digital, being a purist and enjoying developing my own film in a lab. I am still getting used to the camera, as I have only had it a few months, but have truly enjoyed it nonetheless.
My photography skills improve at a more rapid pace because I can instantly see the results of my work.
Overall this camera is a good introduction to DSLR, but I sometimes find it difficult to go "completely manual" in my settings. I especially like taking b/w photos and would like it if the option were available with your auto settings.
I am pleased with the camera on the whole, and especially like the speed, too.
Good buy for the beginner!
Pros: excellent image quality, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

Satisfied

This is my first DSLR and I am quite satisfied with it. I discarded the 18-55 kit lens and bought the 17-85 IS - this lens is much better than the kit lens and gives a lot of versatility to everyday photography.
The menus layout could be better. Automatic ISO absent in creative modes.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Quick Start-up time, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
