[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] great job of getting all the sand and dog hair in my rugs,however the canister doesnt always snap closed and if you are not careful when emptying the bottom falls off and all the dirt etc comes out on your newly cleaned floor

This machine is simple yet powerful enough to take the dirt away from my hardwood floors and carpet. Easy to install and use! Would have rated it 5 stars if not only for its 1. weight - a little heavy for me to carry around especially when I am trying to clean the stairs 2. short hose - not long enough to reach the deepest corners and height of my windows (standard height - my place doesn't come with high ceilings!) and coverings! 3. A little noisy! But overall, I am contented with its features for the price that I pay for. A reason to give it 4 stars!

I have carpet as well as bare floor. I also have 5 animals in the house and coming and going. I used to have to broom the bare floors, then vacuum. Not any more! Now I vacuum on the bare floor setting. it does a great job. At first I went behind with the broom to 'prove' it to myself. Wahoo! Bissell, you saved me a step in my cleaning process. Then change the setting, get the rugs and carpets. I emptied the cannister for the first time after a week. It was very easy! After that, I use my Power Fresh Mop and my floors have never looked better with this less work! :)

Broke within 2 weeks

I bought a Bissell 1816 vacuum about 2.5 months ago. It worked fine for about 2 weeks. Then, one day, I saw smoke coming out from the bottom end. I took it to the local service center recommended by Bissell. The service rep. found that the drive belt had snapped and the agitator was melted. He said Bissell would replace the vacuum and filled out the paperwork. I got a call from him later that day saying that Bissell had started processing my claim. It's been 2 months since then. I am yet to receive the new vacuum and the local service center tells me that there is nothing they can do apart from waiting for Bissell to respond. In short, it's terrible customer service.

I live in the woods, with an outdoorsy husband, five cats and a beagle that sheds more than all the cats combined. We have unsealed brick and hardwood floors, plus area rugs. I have used this vacuum to clean upholstery, cat furniture, pet beds, and messes that vacuums and floors should never have to endure. Unsealed brick gets REALLY dirty and needs a STRONG vacuum - like this one. Over three years of hard use, this vacuum has continued to perform. The trick to keeping this machine performing like new is to make sure the filters are cleaned regularly and replaced as needed. You won't believe how dirty I can get the filters. To save on replacements, I use my leaf blower to to blow out the dust. Crude, yes, but it works, plus I STILL keep plenty of replacement filters on hand for when they start looking yucky. New filters make for a happy machine and an even happier me. I love, love, love this vacuum. Really. I do not work for the company, nor do I own stock in it, nor do I know anyone who works for the company. No one paid me a penny for this review. Nor did they give me any free filters, although I would take them if offered.
