Let's just say that I was floored by the quality of the 3-D movies I play on this. Of course, the Samsung UN55D6400 TV and the Samsung SSG-3100GB 3-D Glasses share some of the credit for this. But I will say that this player boots up faster than it's BlueRay predecessor. And adding a Netflix shortcut [preprogrammed] button on the remote . . . sheer genius!
Pros: Inexpensive, Durable, Lightweight, easy setup, netflix programmed in remote
Cons: remote should be "rf" or "rf/ir"
I would recommend this to a friend!

Plays blu-ray discs ok, but don't expect more

It was a rather cheap blu-ray player. The exterior quality is good, but functionality and sotware features were disappointing; I expected more from Samsung. It has played all the rental DVD and Blu-ray discs we have tried, so this is a positive, though the following negatives may be cause to reconsider purchasing this player -- it constantly losses its network connection for no apparent reason which can only be corrected with a full power cycle (aka pulling the power plug). It has been through several firmware updates and is at its latest but this problem remains. We use the Netflix and Pandora apps which work reasonably well (but not as well as on other devices), and only when the player decides to connect to the network. The remote control is of low quality and does not function all that well, so unless you plan to retire it for a universal remote this may also be a negative. Note: We have a Tivo and Xbox360 which don't have such network issues even when connected using the same patch cable, so the problem is clearly Samsung's.
Pros: Inexpensive, plays dvd/blu-ray discs
Cons: Poor quality, Did not meet expectations, flawed network software and/or hardware, junkie remote
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We don't hook our Bluray up to the internet in any way so there should be no change in it's performance in playing the same Blurays. I'll try the update but am not holding up much hope, concerned it may cause new problems as well. I shouldn't be troubleshooting a new 3D Blueray player at 9pm after coming home from a 2 day work trip. I should put the disk in and it should work, today and next week. Features are great but if it can't do the basic task of playing a disk what's the point?
Pros: Inexpensive, Lightweight, simple to install
Cons: Poor quality, Did not meet expectations
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Although I haven't spent as much time with the player as I have with my compatible Samsung 3D TV. It is very fun to just turn on the device because of its touch censored buttons. I am looking forward to using it for my TV. Great work!
Pros: Durable, Lightweight, compatible, 3d, blu-ray
I would recommend this to a friend!

BD5500 - easy to use

I bought this unit to replace an older DVD player. I was surprised by how small and light it was by comparison. It would have been easier for me to install if it had a double ended electrical cord ( one that plugs into the unit as well as the wall outlet). I found it intuitive to use the basic features such as Netflix. The quality of the netflix streaming movies was a pleasant surprise.
Setting up the wifi for my apple router was a bit challenging. Had to call tech support a few times. The support was very patient, professional and helpful. However, luckily it was me and not my wife who dealt with them. I needed to change some settings for my router. They also have a feature called AllShare which allows you to stream from your PC. This feature does NOT work with all computers.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: not all features are mac friendly, setting ut the wifi was frustrating
