Lacking

There is no dedicated "On" or "Off" buttons of IR commands so adding it to a home theater system is a nightmare.
The "Smart Interface" is way behind the interface on the TVs.
"Anynet+" is horrible if the DVD player goes to sleep it turn the TV off. This bad when you are done watching a Blu-ray and want to watch TV and do not turn the Blu-ray player off, because after a few minutes it turns the TV off.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Did not meet expectations, no "on" or "off" button, anynet does not work logiclly
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Major Problems
on April 24, 2011
Posted by: epicure3
My BD-D5500 has major problems streaming Netflix. It freezes almost every time even before one gets to the choices of films. The network and internet connection work fine according to the Samsung player. I will be bringing mine back and purchasing another brand. Buyer beware if you want to stream Netflix.
Cons: netflix freezes
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I have not used this unit enough to give a critical opinion.
I find it slow loading but I don't know if this is typical of Blue Ray Players. I would hope an upgrade in firmware could improve the performance.
Pros: Inexpensive
I would recommend this to a friend!

This product is better than the Sony Blu-ray Player

Every feature appears to work.
The user interface is slow and tedious.
Pandora works, but the older version of Pandora is better.
Youtube does work, but had to change the privacy setting in Youtube account.
Need to press the red-A button and login each time player is powered up. This is very annoying. If I checked "Save the password" just go ahead and use it and login in auto.
Plays mp3 file in usb drive. However, it does not play by folder, which Sony player does. Can not navigate the file folders using left and right key, as was the case in older Samsung mode like BD-P1590. The two column listing format is bad. We now need to do left-and-right, and up-and-down as well.
Photo viewing is slow. Ability to play selected music along with slide show is a nice feature. Again, would be nice if selection can be made by folders.
The remote control does not work with my Panasonic Plasma TV. None of the 4 control code worked.
The home menu is bad. Shifting items instead of moving the cursor highlight is very confusing to me.
Still does not know what video format it will play.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: user interface is slow
I would recommend this to a friend!

I installed along with a new 55" LED. I am very inpressed with the way Samsung products flawlessly connect with each other. I am using this as my internet/Smart Hub connection. The player is easy to use, and displays excellent picture quality. The functions are really easy to use.
Pros: Inexpensive, Realistic color, Lightweight, seamless connection with samsung anynet products, 1 remote for samsung products, excellent playback quality, excellent wireless connection, easy to setup
Cons: no negatives !!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Blu-ray Disc Player BD-D5500C
on August 21, 2011

I haven't actually used this disc player yet because I was trying to set it up in the wireless mode. Came to find out the wireless adapter wasn't included in the box. I did find in very small print that it was stated the the adapter wasn't included. That notice should be put in very large print or even better just include the adapter in the box.
I would recommend this to a friend!
