I purchased this scanner/copier primarily to copy documents. I can not copy from the scanner to the printer unless the computer is on, as i could with my previouse HP scanner/copier and the copier program is very slow . I haven't tried scanning any slides or film negatives yet, but hope they work as well as you advertise.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Scanner

Bought this scanner to convert all my pictures to digital. It does a great job on pictures, but is amazing for scanning negatives. Only issue is that the thumbnail previews could be larger.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I scan a lot of light, pencil drawings and the 4490 allows me to adjust the contrast and brightness of the image prior to scanning which is great!

Scanner Replacement

My new Epson 4490 Scanner is used in addition to my Epson Artisan 835 Printer to copy all types of old photos, 35mm slides, B/W negatives, and restoring old photos, that a printer did not do. With these two units they complete my home photo studio. This scanner is easy to setup, only load in the driver from the CD and not having to add anymore software as they use the same software.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Unable to connect

Unpack, set up, connect power, and USB as directed. Downloaded the driver and installed.
Scanner will not be recognized. My previous Epson scanner was a snap to set up and ran well. Had to purchase a new one because Epson is no longer supporting the old scanner with a driver for OSX 10.6. Still trying to get the scanner to recognize the computer. So why recommend a product when following all instructions it will not connect.

Looked at many scanner brands. Went with Epson. Best to physically operate and load. Scan results are above par for this unit. Plan to scan 50,000 plus old pics. I certainly need a very good scanner. Good job.
