[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my third HP calculator since the early 80's. Always dependable and accurate, as well as comfortable to use. Thanks HP for such a great product!
I've been using my new 12c Platinum for a few weeks with no real complaints. It is obviously magnitudes quicker than my original 12c (1981, still running) but I never really was bothered by the 2 or 3 blinks during amortization calcs on the original. Like others, I will say the new 12cp doesn't "feel" as solid as the original; the keys have a good click, but sound hollow. The fancy case seems very sturdy, but definitely takes it out of the "shirt pocket" category. I like the business card holder feature. I am one of those original 12c users who went well over 10 years before first battery replacement, so I am curious how long this unit will go with the two CR2032's. I wish I could give the 12cp a 4.9 stars rating because it is still a fantastic tool, but just slightly disappointed in the overall quality.

So Far So Good!

After reading the many stories, and listened to those people who had used the older HP12C before, I carefully made my purchase. I agree with many of the folks who said that this was not exactly like the older models...It is true that the case was too small and therefore, it got pitched...I barely got the old case to fit the new case but this is exactly what I felt was needed. The old model that was made in Brazil was a bit heavier and the keyboard felt like a "superior" calculator! The new one is a bit cheaper and its definitely not like the new one. I have had the old since 1985 and used it regularly until recently when it died...But despite all the negatives, the new HP12C is still great! I don't know how long it will work and maybe HP will go back to the old manufacturing. I will stick this out and if I have to recommend it, I definitely would. Good luck to all of us who know the old from the new and still would make the purchase! Believe in us and stop searching because this is still one of the best financial calculators! Just Go For It!

HP has serious quality problem with HP 12C

I have been using the 12C for 15+ years. Features have always been great. However, in the last few years they must be cutting corners on manufacturing. Buttons don't always record numbers when pressed. This causes constant errors and frustration. Calculations are correct, but have to press buttons multiple times to enter data. Would buy from TI if they had calculator with same functions.

I'm an appraiser and am therefore forced to use this ridiculously outdated calculator to run cash flows for classes/tests. Upgraded to the platinum to avoid the long pauses while the calculator has to think about running net present values (like the old model). That part is much improved.
However, I have purchased two of these platinum models and both are cheaply made, buttons need to be pressed twice to register an entry, and its been very frustrating. I'm finally switching to something a little more modern like the 20b. Don't buy the platinum unless you can't handle the delays while the old model "thinks".

This calculator wouldn't still be around after 30 years, largely unchanged, if it wasn't a superior product. The platinum edition adds some features and enhancements that weren't available on the original gold 12-C, but the essence of an outstanding RPN calculator remain. All professional financial analysts and professionals should own one of these and learn how to use its powerful features. The 12-C is the quintessential H-P flagship device, despite all of the other wonderful devices they've made. H-P is to be commended for continuing to market it.
