Roll the dice

I bought this unit new four years ago. Use it occasionally. Have never had any problems. WiFi works. I like the double sided printing feature and really nice color prints. My two concerns which cannot be overcome are the very slow start-up and the fact the unit is very thirsty for ink, even when using the XL cartridges, which are rather expensive. For B&W printing I use my HP LaserJet IIIP (27 yrs old, a battleship!) and HP 1012 compact laser printer. When this MG5420 gives up I will look to HP.

Noisy, noisy, slow

I bought this unit with high hopes but found myself very, very disappointed in the printer. While its print output is very nice, my experience has been using it is annoying and difficult. This is a NOISY printer. Very noisy. On each startup it goes through a lengthy and noisy routine preparing for output. And if the paper output panel is closed, it will open automatically, but it does so with sudden, LOUD, bang. The software interface provided is very bloated and slow making any scanning operation a lengthy waiting game. There is a smaller less resource demanding app included, but its features are limited if you do not install the larger, bloated app. I would not recommend this printer and am sorry I bought it.
Pros: Compact Design, fast print speed, looks nice
Cons: Difficult to use, noisy, high resource demand

I've been using Canon printers for 20 years and won't buy anything else. It is designed for home use and light office rather than heavy office use, so keep that in mind. I use mine a lot to print knitting patterns I'm going to be doing to save wear and tear on the magazine or book it's in.
My only caveat is that I would love for the second tray to also use standard paper. I recycle my prints for both sides so it would be really handy to be able to place those in the second tray and specify that one for use in printing out patterns and keep clean paper in the other tray. Not a deal breaker though.
I'd needed a printer that also scanned as I have limited space. This fits the bill.
I also prefer one that has separate tanks for each color since you usually run out of red and/or blue and still have half a tank of yellow. This printer fills that requirement as well. Two black tanks and one for each color as well.
Cons: does not allow regular paper in the second tray.l

VERY VERY noisy, VERY SLOW to get ready to print, VERY hard to find refills. These printer are sent out with tea cup size cartridges. I've printed about a dozen sheet an I'm down a quarter of the way thought the cartridge.
This is my 3rd and last Cannon. Not a good showing for Cannons new printer!
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup
Cons: Slow Print Speed, Heavy/Bulky, High Ink Consumption, Flimsy Construction, noise, s-s-l-l-o-o-w-w to print, can't find refill ink or cartiridges

Uses VERY expensive ink like there is an endless supply!
You cannot print in draft to save ink, and printing in black and white doesn't slow down its demand for ink.
Not a good performance for Canon's reputation.
Pros: none
Cons: Difficult to use, Slow Print Speed, Difficult Setup, High Ink Consumption
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A nice deal

I got this as a belated graduation present and am quite pleased with it. After the initial setup, I just have to push a couple buttons and out comes a copy, it isn't really complicated at all. I use this as an artist, scanning and printing my works. It's noises and clicks lets you know that it's working. I'm fairly sure it goes through an alignment check before each copy, which is fine with me as I would not want my artwork roughly printed by an underprepared machine.
For those experiencing ink outages sooner than they expected, it may be because they have tried out the clean/deep clean functions which states that more ink will be used than what is normal for your average printout. For those who experience slowness, the power in the computer that they connect it to, (esp if using wifi rather than a cable) may play a major role.
As for my one observed con, The lid could have been slightly improved, but overall I think it's a good buy.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use
Cons: Slow Print Speed, scanner lid design

Waste of money

If you're looking to print out important college papers before class, look no further. You only have to wait a solid 25 minutes before getting an error. You're better off getting a dysfunctional R2-D2 to print your papers instead of this whirring mess.

I bought it maybe a year ago and I have wasted so much money on ink, I would not recommend it it's beautiful and all but not worth it. I should of never listen to the canon lady who spoke really highly of it at best buy.
