Superior Canon Products

My new EF 100-400MM L series lens more than proved its worth and quality while on a whale photo shoot in Maui. The seas were rough and a quick focus, controlled depth of field, and fast shot were required....this lens did it all. There isn't a blur and the Pacific colors were totally true. You can't go wrong with a Canon Product...from printers to the entire EOS system Canon products are superior.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, functional controls

A Lens to Own and Use!

I've only had this lens for about a week but it's been on my cameras 90% of the time. I've used it on a 60D with the 1.4x III and by itself. The auto focus is fast and reliable. The sharpness is outstanding. I shot some photos of a green winged teal duck this afternoon. Every feather is clearly defined. Yes, the push/pull design seems a little like a throw back, but nostalgia never hurt anyone.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, versatile

Back to the 100-400L

Purchased with a 1.4 teleconverter and have just started looking at the lens sharpness.
I have started using this lens with a full frame 6d and the images are very sharp and the focus is very accurate. The 1.4xIII converter does not appear to detract measurably from the sharpness of the lens at 400mm, very impressive so far.
The lens feel and tightness of the zoom mechanism is much improved.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

Not up to par

I purchased the 100-400 f4.5-5.6L about 2 months ago and have never been satisfied with its sharpness. I have 4 other EOS L lenses and am constantly amazed at the quality of the images I capture with my 7D. This lens totally misses the mark and its performance is disappointing. The images are excessively soft and lack the sharpness of other L lenses. It is almost unusable at f4.5-5.6 and barely acceptable under ideal circumstances at f8-16. The quality is OK from 100-300mm but deteriorates at 400mm. I added this lens to get better reach for wildlife photography and nearly always use a tripod. When shooting handheld, the IS gives only about 1 stop of improvement.
I am sending the lens back to Canon for inspection and repair or replacement. If it cannot be fixed or replaced, it will probably stay on the shelf while I shoot with my 70-200mm f2.8L ISII and a 1.4x extender.
Pros: size weight, cost
Cons: image quality, is system is weak
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

My "G0-To lens for long distance
on November 7, 2017

I take long distance shots of pointing breed dog field trials on horseback and while riding in ATV/UTVs and am well known nationally for my dog shots. I shoot with both a full frame 6D and crop frame 4i Canons. I use a BushHawk gun pod mount and as they say...if there is a better lens set up for this job...I haven't found it as I can afford anything. Buy it because it works fine. If it didn't I wouldn't own it.

Erratic Results
on October 6, 2011

I purchased the 100-400 primarily to shoot soccer and surfing and though very happy with the range the lens allows me I have to say I'm a bit flummoxed by the erratic quality of the images. I use a 7D manually and find that when shooting action in good light at anything less than 7.1 the sharpness of the images is less than desirable. As well, if I increase the ISO to 200 or above in order to accommodate faster shutter speeds (I shoot at 800 - 1000) the result is a noisy image.
Under ideal conditions, when I don't have to increase ISO above 160 and can lock in the aperture to 7.1 and higher, I get outstanding results. As we all know, ideal conditions don't always present themselves. I've worked tirelessly to use the proper AF settings to make certain I'm not failing on that end.
At best, I can say my experience with the lens is somewhat tepid. Very well could be a flaw in the lens itself as most other reviews tend to rave. If you have any thoughts on my issue, I'm all ears.
Pros: Superior build quality
Cons: Semi-sharp images

waste of money

Started out ok, but after a few months this lense turned out to be a waste of money. Images not sharp, very slow. Not worth the money. It's been in for service several times. Image stabilizer burnt out twice. I think I received a lemon.
Cons: Slow auto-focus, Semi-sharp images, Poor build quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Tele-zoom

I bought the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM (my first lens with my new 60D) primarily for wildlife photography. It was super for monitoring our nesting tree swallows this spring, plus hummers and butterflies. Just shot it tight across the valley to isolate fall color. Everything sharp enough for at least 8.5x11 so far.
I do wish there was a zoom lock, to keep the tube from extending when carried pointing down - a minor quibble. Not fixed focal length, so probably incompatible with extenders, and not real fast - but plenty good/useful for me!
Pros: Superior build quality
