5020 a real star

I sold my year-old Epson 3010 to upgrade to a 5020. The goal was to add frame interpolation, better color gradation, 2D to 3D, and ability to resolve the pattern to under a pixel width. I accomplished all these and could not be happier with the look of the images on our 10' screen. The projector worked well right out of the box in THX mode, although we changed to "standard" mode, ECO power-saving, and made tweaks to contrast and skin tone. We did not feel we had to run a complete color balancing, since the image was spectacular, even as compared to our color balanced 3010. HIGHLY recommended.

The picture quality is excellent. This is our second Epson projector with this one being an upgrade to 3D. No issues with either projector and would recommend this product and company to everyone.

Not perfect but worth every penny

I have used the 5020 for several months and am absolutely delighted with it's performance.
Positioning Flexibility:
When I 1st fired up the projector I had it resting on a table opposite the center of the screen. Using the mechanical adjustments, in a few short minutes had a wonderful image on the screen. Later, I built a shelf with lots of breathing room in all directions about a foot from the ceiling. After a few more minutes I was able to again (roughly) mechanically adjust the image to give me a geometrically perfect image. Very nice.
Mechanical Quality:
The lens is amazing. Incredible sharp. However, precisely sizing and aligning the image with the mechanical adjustments is rather difficult. The 5020's underlining mechanics (feel like) there is more plastic and play then fine machining. This is a projector you will want to set up only once and never change the adjustments for fear of wearing out the adjustment gears. I read a review where one user experienced such a failure with his Epson 6010.
Audio Noise: 2d is acceptable but 3d gets a little noisy, (still worth the price for the wonderful 3d image). The auto - iris can be heard over the fan noise in 2d mode but worth the sounds as the blacks are amazing and dark screens on this projector are incredible.
Brightness: To maximize light output, I have the projector set back just far enough to fully light my 147” 1.0 screen at the maximum wide angle setting. The image brightness is, for my old eyes, nice and bright. 3D is also bright enough but I wouldn't want to go with a screen much larger then the 147” in 3d mode.
The 3d glasses are light weight and comfortable. However, occasionally, when you have bright, fat, white objects (like end titles) against a black or dark background, there is very noticeable and annoying cross-talk. Most of the time, such demands are not made on the system and 3d is very impressive.
Considerations:
To appreciate this projector's amazing performance, you absolutely must build a “bat cave”. i.e you must have black furniture, walls, floor, and ceiling with no light source illuminating the room other then the projector.
Conclusion:
One interesting side effect of building a media room around this projector is when I go to the local electronics stores and look at the huge LED Tv's on display, I find myself shaking my head and wonder why the images look so bad (for such a comparably small image) on their televisions.

Awesome Cinematic Picture Quality

We have had the projector for about one month. It is positioned in front of us, on a table, projecting onto a large wall painted with special screen paint. The projector is about 9 feet from the wall and our viewing distance is about 17 feet or so. Set-up from this position took all of about one minute using the large lens shift and focus dials on the top of the unit. We have not altered the factory "out of the box" settings and have been simply viewing what appeared when we initially turned on the projector. Why? Because the images have been so beautiful, we just have not seen the need to do so....especially being a bit technologically challenged and not prone to tinkering. I am certain that others may want to explore the 5020UB's extensive fine tuning capabilities but, for now, the picture seems sufficiently amazing. Our viewing environment has almost total darkness at night and a modest bit of light during the day. The 2D picture coming from Blu Ray discs is extraordinarily cinematographic and beautiful. Colors are deep and rich and pop off the screen when they should. Rendering of dark scenes is excellent ( blacks, shadow detail, etc. ). DVD's through the blu ray player are very good as well, especially if they have been mastered carefully from the original source. Cable TV of HD shows is terrific. The unit is extremely quiet and I suspect that it must be in ECO mode presently. I have to put my ear near it to detect the fan distinctly. We have not tried 3D as I do not have a 3D blu ray player yet. The bottom line is that this is an amazing technological achievement, bringing full cinematographic visuals into the home at a reasonable price. It's not cheap, but just think of the money saved by not having to go to the movies!

Considering Your First Projector?

Like me, you may be considering your first projector. I had an idea of how much I wanted to spend, but knew nothing about projectors and was hesitant to even buy one as a result. After much research and increasing my budget I stepped up to the 5020. One of the reasons was because of the automatic lens shift; that is, the ability to essentially plug it in and within a few turns of a knob your screen is centered regardless where the projector is in relationship to the screen. Addiitonally, I purchased this beause of the video quality, overall performance, warranty offered by Epson, and the long shelf life and low cost of the lamp.

Great 3D Projector

I purchased this projector for a dedicated Home Theater room, its also my first projector. I have it ceiling mounted approximately 12' from a fixed frame 96" screen. It was easy to install and adjust image size and keystone. The picture is bright and sharp, and the 3D is excellent. I have 2 3D flat screen TV's one is plasma, and one is LED, but I prefer watching 3D on this projector, the 3D depth seems better. I mainly use the THX mode for both 2D and 3D, and it looks great in that mode. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Had mine for little less than a year and it has been trouble free. The images are great, and "full size" sports players are nice
