2012 REVIEW

I believe I have gotten the maximum deductions available to me. Turbo Tax is much faster and less headache (research) to understand all the necessary input than doing taxes by mail. Transfer of information from federal to state forms is convenient and time saving.
What's great about it: Very thorough. Step by step input is easy. e-file is the way to go.

Good for uncomplicated return

If your tax includes complications with carryovers, deductions, multiple forms of investment income, and tax-exempt things, it is difficult to know or to understand what information is going where. An accompanying outline of IRS instructions would be helpful. If you accidentally start with a wrong copy of last year's turbotax file, prepare the return, and then discover your mistake, there is apparently no way to correct all of the information. You must discard all your work and start again. This is a serious shortcoming.
What's great about it: Data entry is simple; downloads work
What's not so great: Can't correct if you accidentally use the wrong file for last year.

Somewhat complex

Although I have little or no problems with the return the Foreign tax credit and carryover portion is more difficult than it needs to be. More automation and carryforwards from previous years would be helpful
What's great about it: Most of return easy
What's not so great: Foreign tax and tax credit complex and cumbersome

My 2012 Return

This makes about 12-13 years in a row I have used Turbo Tax. I obviously am happy with it or I would not have that streak still going. I am glad that they have removed the State Income tax out since living in Texas that does not apply to us. I am happy with your product and will be a user of your product again next year!
What's great about it: User friendly
What's not so great: None

All in all this is a great product. As a senior citizen computer programs can be a little difficult to understand at times. This walked me right through with very little confusing areas.
What's great about it: Saved lots of time.
What's not so great: Questions on certain investments was a little confusing.

I'm a volunteer tax preparer for the AARP-RSVP program. We use Taxwise software. Turbo Tax is much easier to use, especially for people without tax training. I've used Turbo Tax for at least 20 years now. I especially like how it carries over information from the previous year--especially depreciation.
What's great about it: I like how the page on TT mirrors the tax form. e.g. Dividends, capital gains
